Morning Guys and Gals, Just recently joined the Golfing brigade and boy its fustrating! but so worth it when it goes right! Started with a cheap set of SportsDirect Dunlop specials (graphite shaft) but quickly realised / told that this did not suit my swing speed. Needed steel shafts, brought irons from American Golf Callaway Big Berths's as needed max forgiveness! these dropped 8 shots off my next 18 holes........ Just about to go out and buy a good driver now as the one I have been given is 2003 Taylor Made, local golf pro suggested Ping G15 as bigger head and again that magic word more "forgivness" Gone from going round my local "tight" course which is a 9 hole par 32, 1st round scored 60, now have done two rounds in 87! My father in law who plays off 13 went round in 40, so I've come along way but plenty more to do! Have had a couple of lessons now and boy it "screws" you up........ Changing everything your learn, OK learned wrongly. I'm guessing it will all pay of when I get better. Cheers for reading

Christopher, you only have to stand on any tee, at any golf course, and you will see that the word "forgiveness" is nothing more than marketing hype from the manufacturers. Your 2003 Taylormade will be just as good as anything else currently on the market. If you are not able to hit that effectively, then I can asure you that a new one will not do it for you either. Spend your hard earned money on lessons, as that is the only way forward in this game. Good Luck. |

Welcome to the golfing world. You're gonna hate it
It's one of them games where you can hit 99 poor shots but the 1 perfect one you hit makes you keep coming back. |

I have to agree with John here, get yourself some lessons, but give yourself time between your lessons to actually put the advice into plenty of practice, it also helps if you have a regular playing partner who can observe you when you play who can give you positive feedback. As for using a Driver while learning, i believe this only makes it harder for you to improve your all round game, your Driver will the least used type of club in your bag. Get your swing, rhythm and tempo sorted first. I would recommend that you get yourself a good 3 wood that you can also use off the fairway, you will use it more and it will provide you with much better value. This wil also give you confidence to hit your fairway shots further. You can always get a big stick when you start hitting fairways. it seems to me that if you play a 9 hole par 32, you should not have the need to use a Driver.
good luck whatever you decide |

Lessons are fantastic. But you have to practice what you are taught. I had some drills to do from my last lesson and when I thought I had them down pat I used them less and then not at all. Big mistake. A slow degradation of my shot quality followed, so slowly that I didnt notice. After yesterdays shocking effort at this game I revisited my lessons drills and lo and behold my swing had got "less as it should be". A bit of time relearning and regaining the feel of these drills and I'm back on track. Its a nutty nutty game, you will love to hate it. As for clubs, its like motorcycle helmets and leathers buy the best fitting stuff you can afford. |

Hi guys, thanks for all the good advice! My girlfriend asked me if I wanted her to buy me a driver for my birthday on Saturday. It was a toss up between that and a short break away, I chose the driver. So off we trotted to American Golf to try out some on their simulator, we tried the ping g20 and the k20 both with 10.5 loft and 12 loft. Both were hit well opted for the g20 with the 10.5 degree loft. Onto the golf course, didnt hit my 1st drive well but 2nd time hit it, boy it stayed hit! My playing partners only caught me up with there 2nd shots. Was over the moon with the results, couple this with some improvement lessons, I'm starting to feel better about my game. Lots of things to improve, but I'm loving the game and that's all I want from this sport. |
