Del Boy,

Good question. I suspect though that you will receive a limited response as most amateur golfers do not take lessons, and certainly not on a regular basis. Although some will do so for a limited period after first picking up a golf club as it can be embarrassing holding the club at the wrong end.

I essentially see two types of player on the driving range:

Those practising alone. Usually  endlessly bashing away, ingraining the same old faults over and over again, and conversely that rare of rare creatures - the player who appears to be inseperable from his / her non-resident coach.

The latter group appears to be broken down as to 90% extremely gifted young golfers with the remainder largely comprising wealthy young professional  sportsmen  (eg. local rugby players).

My club's three PGA professionals on the other hand appear to have a mixed bunch of customers. But the very young and ladies appear to be by far the predominant group.

I've been lucky insofar as I have  met some of the world's best coaches - Butch Harmon, Art Sellinger etc. and whilst their successes speak for themselves I have to say that  my local guru (a non-charging, non-PGS professional) Jeremy  is perfect for me.

Different coaches have their different quirks and sometimes those quirks are at odds with any particular player's idiosyncracies. Butch for example can live with Miss XXX being totally out of line at the top of her backswing, yet (muttering under his breath) condems the very long and absolutely necessary technically correct backswings which longdrive competitors have to utilise.

So, whoever one chooses as a coach it is essential that their outlook and understanding is on all fours with one's own and that communication between coach and player really works.

Very good point. Very relivant to me too. Been somewhere that's got all the mod cons but I just don't seem to be able to take to the pro and been elsewhere where it's a fairly basic set up but get a better feeling leaving there, so a very good pointguess it will just take me some trial and error lessons till I find someone I'd like to go back to time and time again
