I am finally accepting that it may be worth getting a gps device.

I have read reviews on line but i would like to ask advice about different systems.

Anyone with any good / bad views ?

One bit of advice I'd give being a Golf Retailer is check which devices get their course infomation from actually sending someone to the course and physically measuring it, as opposed to the companies that use aerial photos or google earth images to 'Map' courses. You'll find the accuracy on the devices where someone has been and measured the course on foot will be higher then that of the others.

With winter approaching everyone should check the state of their car tyres before possibly buying GPS.

If the tyres are fine, then check the brakes. GPS totally depends on getting to the course in one piece.

Be safe this winter.

I have freecaddie (Pro version) on my HTC android phone. I mapped out my home course as best I could. Now with my phone side by side a skycaddie SG5 I'm never more than 1 yard different. I really cannot fathom why anybody would pay the big bucks for a dedicated golf GPS when the modern smartphones are so good at it with some software.

Of course you need a smartphone in the first instance.

Because Lewis if you use any sort of Phone as a GPS in a Competition you'll be disqualified as Phones are not permitted as they are a 'Transmitter' under the R&A and USGA Rules. Thats why you should be a dedicated Golf GPS as it only receives Information and doesn't therefore contravene any rules.
