Your Help required, i need a new 5 wood

The prosimmon 21 degree 5 wood I use as my Driver is probably the easiest club that i have ever used, it is starting to show significant wear and tear and i am considering buying another like for like 5 wood or up-grading to a better higher quality club.  But for an up-grade i would need to see a significant improvement on Carry distance off the tee.  Am i being reasonable to expect a 21* fairway wood to carry further than that which i already carry?

For me to make a reasonable assessment i require the following details if possible.

The actual carry distance of 2 or 3 selected clubs not including Roll

approx. degree of loft of selected irons

Your 21* fairway wood make and model, not a hybrid or rescue club, and the same details for your most consistent mid iron you hit 6, 7 or 8 iron and the degree of loft for these irons and the ball you use to get these distances.

I'm using 2007-08 version Pro V1x ball.

The Carry distance of my  Graphite shafted Prosimmon 21* is between 190 -200 yds off the Tee.

My Browning Mirage 7 iron has a loft of about 35* and a carry of 140 yds

Colin,

WOW, that's a lot of info.

The ultimate 3,5, and 7 wood heads were made by Ashton Golf in the USA. up until 18 months ago.

Ashton made their fairway heads to the same quality as driver heads (vis a vis COR etc.) which may have been unique in the golf industry. They also used their own secret high performance titanium blend, and quite a novel build technique. So, all in all their  fairwood wood heads were light years ahead of anything else produced. They were by far the most expensive in the golf world, and cost a lot of money to produce.

When Ashton were bought out the new owner kept their profitable development lines, but totally discarded their golf lines as they were not profitable enough.

Eighteen months on golfers in the know are now almost willing to kill for brand new Ashton components, and the only heads appearing on eBay USA are usually LH or draw bias heads.

I can however source both 5 (19d) & 7 (21d)  Ashton X-1 fairways wood heads (NOT clubs)  if my contacts have not yet sold out. I have several customers wanting Ashton 3 woods but there are none to be had.

That sorts the head.

You need to be assessed for a shaft.

Grip is a question of personal preference.

If one considers  less sophisticated equipment then I use Adams fairway woods. They are high performing, but not in same the league as Ashton.

It all depends on how high you set your aspirations.

Colin,

I suggest going to a store with an open range, trying a few and comparing them directly against your Prosimmon. All golfers are different and it's the only way you will find something right for you.

  • Loft can vary between manfuacturers ranges, let alone between manufacturer.  This will tell you nothing
  • If you are hitting the same type of ball with each club, the ball type becomes largely irrelevant.  I hit a V1x slightly further than my current ball of choice - Z-STAR - but I get better control with the Srixon
  • The shaft probably has as much, if not more, to do with roll:carry ratio as the kick point, flex, bend, torque, etc will define the flight path (Ivan is much better at advising on this than me)
For what it's worth, my Callaway Diablo 5W is 19* (I think), has a stiff Aldila DVS shaft and will carry my Z-STAR 200 yards approx
