FORE LEFT!!!!!!

Let me set the scene..

Standing on the 7th tee, a 184 yard par 3, my mate and I had just approached the tee box when the 2 ball in front disappeared behind the trees on our left to tee off down the 8th..

We both teed off, had just put our clubs back in our bags and went to walk up the hole to the green.. Then a loud cry of FORE LEFT came from behind the trees and we stopped and looked up and to see this golf ball find 1 of only 3 gaps between the trees hurtling towards us! The guy who had shouted fore had managed to hook his tee shot through the trees and in our direction!!

When people say 'my life flashed before my eys', well, I experienced it! As I leaned away from it, it couldn't have been more than a foot away from my face as it wizzed past!

Has anyone else had a close experience with a speeding golf ball or been hit?

I'm just thankful he shouted and that it didn't clonk me or my mate in the head!!!

Ive had a close shave like that. Only time been hit with something that hurt was when playing cricket, was standing at Silly Point (yes, ironic position lol) when the guy did a fully pledged drive in my direction and it hit me on the head. Was wearing helmet but still had to be replaced by the reserve as I was so disorientated it was unreal. If hit in chest, who knows what would have happened.

I got hit on the hand by a ball that was flicked up by the greenkeeper on a mower. as i use a walking stick it hit my index finger making me shout out like i had been shot. I was a real trooper and finished my round, although when i stopped my index finger swelled up like a balloon. plenty of ice and making the wife make my tea and generally wait on me hand and foot and i was back on the course in no time

I was playing with the brother-in-law and his best mate a couple of years ago.  To play off the 9th tee you have to walk back along the fairway about 50 yards from the 8th green and we had left our bags about 20 yards from the tee to the side.  Teeing off third, I managed a massive duck hook that struck one of the bags at the speed of a bullet about the height that removes your chances of further children.  My two playing partners were stood either side of the bag, both leaning on it and didn't even have time to flinch.  How I managed to miss them both I will never know.

While playing in the pro's day comp my son hooked his 3 wood off the tee of the 12 th hole which runs alongside a main road. We heard the awful thud and then the screech of brakes and knew the outcome was not good! As we met the driver(who had a face whiter than the ball) to explain that the club insurance would take care of it he insisted on showing us the result. The ball had embedded itself in the windscreen in front of the drivers eyes and almost penetrated it!  We could then understand why he was shaking uncontrollably as the impact must have been terrible. To add to my sons shame they even posted his score as 32 points + fiesta windscreen!!!

Playing at Pwllelli GC some years ago with a couple of Danish visitors, after 12 holes there was nothing to suggest these people didn't have bad tee shots and I'd hit my drive and moved forward and left in fron of the tee box, one of the Danes swung his driver and caught the ball right on the heel sending it flying 3' off the floor and straight at my groin, I managed to turn enough for it to hit to the right of that area but nevertheless I dropped like a stone and starting laughing because the pain was that bad I didn't want them to see the tears streaming down my face.

The resultant bruise was about 7" across and all colours of the rainbow, I don't move forward anymore

Just recently i was playing with a few of my mates and we had just teed off on a long par four. Anyway we were just approaching our balls to play our second shots which had to be no more than 250yrds from the tee when a four ball behind us started to tee off on the same hole. One of there balls went flying just past my head and landed in front of me.

Surely common sense would of said wait for them to play there seconds shots before teeing off themselves. Some golfers these days dont have a clue about anything.

Adam

Would have been really tempted to fire that one straight back at them. I know that would make me as bad as them but ...................................................................

Lee, the first rule of golf - if you hear FORE!!! get your head down rather than looking to see where it came from.

Last year I was looking for a mates ball in the rough down an adjacent hole, somebody teed off and shouted fore. We both turned our backs to the incoming shot but then I heard ball on body and my mate screaming in pain.

I turned to see if it was serious and saw him jumping up and down clutching his butt cheek - I laughed so much I thought my pants would never dry...lol

A few weeks ago I was playing with a guy who mishit a shot down the left hand side. The ball never went more than 4ft off the ground straight towards a group coming up an adjacent fairway. We all shouted FORE and this group all turned away from us and covered their heads. Unfortunately the ball hit one of them in the side just below his ribs. He just dropped to the ground and didn`t move. We all rushed over, really worried. He then jumped up and said - `Got you there, I reckon you owe me a drink for this`. Boy were we relieved!

Does anyone know when this business of shouting "Fore Right!" or "Fore Left!" started? I don't remember it happening until a few years ago.

From my experience it causes more confusion than a simple shout of "Fore!" with players on the course wondering whose left or right?

Steve - I think I usually do just cover my head, but also there is a natural reaction to see where its coming from! On this occasion, it was the right thing to do!!

Anyhow, it was too close for my liking!

(Good luck with the Trilby Tour!)

One thing that is in common here. A shout of FORE and you all turn away. At the other end, a ball missing a person by a few yards, do you shout Fore and hope they don't turn into it?

"Fore Left\Right" comes off the Tours I think.

A funny story from Filey GC. One foggy morning and a Medal on the go.

"FORE RIGHT!"

"WHO'S RIGHT?"

"OUCH! THAT HURT"

Three different voices from three different locations, they were followed by the sound of laughter drifting acroos the fairways. No one was hit, thankfully.
