I often wonder why most manufacturers make great forged wedges but only as small blade designs. Whilst this is fine for short chips etc , it makes full swing shots tougher for a lot of us mid/high h/cappers who cannot strike blades consistently. I use mizuno mx wedges as they are larger/forged and much more forgiving(and a bit cheaper?) than tiny pear shaped designs. As cavity back clubs fill most bags nowadays it just seems strange to go from a large forgiving 9 iron or PW to a tiny GW or LW and expect to nail them on a regular basis! What do you guys think? |

David to be honest with you I can't stand chunky (game improvement) clubs, there is no way you can connect with the ball cleanly. By their nature they are built to help higher handicappers hit the ball but you can't work it like a blade style head. It's better to play with proper clubs and hone your technique than to have a lump of metal on the end of a shaft.

I hit my wedges fairly well. They are normal blade wedges. My 3 to pw are cavity backs, but they are old Ben Sayer ones. I had to ask my pro if they were blades because the cavities weren't that deap. He said they were the closest thing he'd seen to a blade without being a blade, they have a slight cutaway and thats all.
My problem is hitting lon irons, so i think making cavity back wedges would take away all the feel that you need for a good short game. Wedges should be easier to hit because the club is shorter and the loft is steeper therefore minimizing sidespin. I think thats why they dont manufacture cavity wedges.
I see Nike are doin a set that have a 3 & 4 hybrid, 5, 6 & 7 cavity back with an 8, 9, PW as blades. That sounds right up my alley.... wid I had £300 to spare! |

Wayne, that was my whole point, although scratch players like yourself will be able to use blades, some us h/cappers cannot hit full shots regularly enough and scoring suffers. Since I changed to larger (but not ugly)mx forged wedges I can now use both the GW/LW with just as much confidence as my normal irons(mx200) for both full pitch/chip shots and my scores are falling as a result. I just noticed that most mags/websites guide everyone towards the small vokey/mp/cleveland type of wedge that can be a handful for higher h/cap players. |

I reckon it's in the mind when it comes to using a bladed wedge David and I'm pretty sure I'd have you hitting one nicely in no time at all, it's all in the technique. |

I'm sure you could wayne! If only I had the time to spare. I have had clevelands etc in the past but struggled to hit good shots on a regular basis. As you may know my irons are pocket cavity in the 4-7 irons and solid cavity 8-pw. The mx wedges are just an extension from these and although they still have thin toplines etc they are larger and more forgiving overall. My shortgame has improved no end since getting 'em. I just could't figure out why all manufacturers make a range of models to suit various levels of ability but when it comes to wedges most types are easier for good ball strikers to use than the rest of us. |

Most high handicappers don't think of course management when it comes to playing, your thought on every hole should be what do I need to do to leave me with 120yds (or a preferred distance), instead HH's smack a ball and worry about wedges when they get to a close enough point to the hole. Therefore there is no concentration in the shot nor is there any experience of what they need to do to get it close, so they grab whatever wedge they think they need and promptly cock it up. |

The puzzling thing for me David R, is how on earth have you got to 11 handicap if you cannot play a wedge. |

I can now, john as explained in my post. |

Well done, David, but you are compromising your game because the specialist wedges are much better, especially for a player of your capabilities. Any club that forgives a poor strike does one no favours in the long term. |
