Hi all I have been asked to take part in a three club challange. 18 holes with only three clubs, £3 per person winner takes all. what would your three clubs be. I would go for putter 52* maybe an iron or rescue. phil |

Putter 7 Iron 3 Wood |

hi matt do think with a 3 wood you need a wedge or are you thinking of running 7 iron in. |
![]() Phillip NewtonHandicap : 14.1 Reply : Mon 28th Jun 2010 19:55 |
good choice wayne distance and controll. |
![]() Matt SimmonsHandicap : 19.8 Reply : Mon 28th Jun 2010 20:09 |
If it were one club, would be the 7 all day long and twice on sundays I can chip with a 7 Iron, Punch with a 7 and I'm sure I could lob with it too. What more can a man want other than a wife with glorious hooters and a 7 Iron... |

15d 1 iron - 190yds to 260yds / 52d pitching wedge - 5 yds to 140yds / putter. Four clubs really needed to cover every distance. |

3 or 5 wood (depending on course), 6 iron, pitching wedge. Putting can be done with a gripped down 3 or 5 wood for longer putts and with the sole of the wedge for close ones |

4 iron, wedge and putter for me. |

Putting can be done with a gripped down 3 or 5 wood for longer putts and with the sole of the wedge for close ones 2 questions Chris P? 1 Why would you use either a 3 or 5 wood depending on longer putts...........if your stance is correct then why would you use a longer club, the through action is done via the shoulders not the hands. 2 I would love to see you hit the ball with a wedge using only the sole!!!!! I think you mean the bottom edge of the club, struck on the balls equator. |
![]() Russell WalkerHandicap : 3 Reply : Tue 29th Jun 2010 10:58 |
I would use similar to Wayne but a 3 hybrid instead of 4 iron, then 9 iron and putter, I would then shape the ball to add or take distance off. |

Wayne, 1. It's much easier to control the longer distance with the wood and bigger margin for error with the longer swing to get a clean connetcion due to the way the wedge would be used 2. Yes I mean the bottom edge on the equator And one of the shots I practice is a 5 wood from 2-4" deep rough around the edge of the green. The connection is much cleaner and the effect of the grass on the club much lower |

Totally depends on the course. I would prefer 4 iron, PW and putter but where I play (6736 of the whites) there are only a couple of the par 4's you could reach with 4 iron, wedge and 1 of those needs more carry than a 4 iron to clear the hazrd across the fairway. Also the shortest par 5 is over 530 yrds so again not sure if 2 4 irons and a wedge would be enough. I would have to pick 19 degree rescue, 7 iron and putter, have to be bumb and runs around the greens with rescue or 7 iron depending on situation but no way I would drop the putter. |

3 Hybrid, Pitching wedge and putter. Good idea for a challenge though, makes you think more about what you use and when. |

I always take my 4 Iron equivlant rescue club, my 7 Iron and a Wedge. Works very well for me and I have the option of chip-putting with my 7 Iron or my Wedge. Never understand people who take an actual putter because they are effectively limiting themselves to 2 clubs, as where else can they use the putter? |

I don't dispute the use of a wood Chris just your choice of whether a 3 or 5 wood depending on longer putts???? Do you have 2 putters depending on longer putts?? |
![]() Dave leyHandicap : 11 Reply : Wed 30th Jun 2010 08:47 |
It could depend on wether the putt is 230yrds or 210yrs and finding te equator of the ball with a wedge is natural for Chris finding the bottom seems to be his problem. Putter, wedge and 6 iron for me. |

18* hybrid, 9 iron, putter |

I'm with Leyo. Putter, wedge and 6 iron for me. We play this format quite often in our Seniors roll-up and the scoring is usually better than with a full set. Should tell us something. |

The way I see it is that in theory for me I can reach every hole in regulation except maybe 200+ yd par 3's |

4 hybrid, pitch & putter. Wayne, i think Chris means which of the 2 he has in his bag as he stated 3 or 5 wood depending on course. then whichever of the 2 he chose for long putts and the bottom edge of pitch for closer putts? |
![]() Gary HandHandicap : 19 Reply : Wed 30th Jun 2010 10:33 |
you must hit a 6 iron along way the Dave |
![]() Dave leyHandicap : 11 Reply : Wed 30th Jun 2010 10:57 |
Gary, in Ideal conditions my 6 iron is a 160 yrds carry, but by puting positve loft on the club (hooded, closed) can turn my 6 to a 4 so 200+yrds are achievable for me depending on roll out.Like wise i can do the same with the wedge up to 160 but would in most circumstaces would take some distance off the 6 iron. It's a format I have played many tmes and as JP said the scoring can often be better. |
![]() John PettittHandicap : 19.4 Reply : Wed 30th Jun 2010 11:28 |
Playing with the same club, shot after shot makes it easy and as David has just said there are many ways to introduce length and less distance from any club. |
![]() Gary HandHandicap : 19 Reply : Wed 30th Jun 2010 15:32 |
I supose that is very true if your allways hitting a six iron then your going to have a consistant swing that you can repeat all day. This also really teaches you the benefit of being able to manipulate the ball. Even if you just play a straight shot a draw and a fade that's 3 yardages for 1 club add in punches and high shots and you could easily have 9 distances for 1 club take that onto the course with a full bag that's almmost 140 different yardages. Now that has really got my mind working I'd better get practicing. |

On a slightly different thread I only ever play with a half set of clubs through the winter months the course gets wet so no run from drives so I drop my driver and only take out my three fairway then 3,5,7,9,iron and putter. I don't bother with a sand wedge because the bunkers are to wet. I can shoot as low a score with a half set, as I can with a full set, Try it you will be surprised. |

hi Thanks for all your input, I have been hitting my new driver very well missing only a few fareways. Could consider Driver 7 or 8 iron and putter. phil |
![]() Chris Perry[FORUM MODERATOR]Handicap : 15.5 Reply : Wed 30th Jun 2010 20:42 |
I would say "No" Phil. Where can you use your driver except off the tee on longer holes? You need to pick clubs that can be used from as many different places as possible |
![]() Phillip NewtonHandicap : 14.1 Reply : Wed 30th Jun 2010 20:49 |
see what your saying chris but you would grab the driver on 14 holes and I only miss 2-3 fareways so would you not gamble on distance. the 7 iron would be the club for any lie. phil |
![]() John PettittHandicap : 19.4 Reply : Wed 30th Jun 2010 22:09 |
Philip, if as you say your driving is of an excellent quality, then your game after that must be pretty dismal for you to still be more than a bogey golfer, so I fail to see how the 7 iron is going to be the miracle club to get you round within your handicap. |

Ivan, although it is recognised that luck can play a part in golf, unfortunately there is not enough around to enable anyone to win by that alone, some skill is also required. |

John, Too true. I'm off to my school re-union tomorrow. With luck I'll dodge my old flames. But some skill may be required too. At first light I'll be playing again on my first course - Peewit, Ilkeston - a par 60. I won't need luck there, just a firm kick from tee to each green. Whilst you're sleeping I'll hopefully be scoring two after two after two - kick putt, kick putt. I must remember to take proper shoes, not my usual flip flops. :*&^%$$: |
