Firstly I would like to introduce myself and then pose the question. I have been playing golf for twenty odd years and I am a qulified coach. I actually teach local people for free, I know this sounds mad but I love the game so much and just want to give back. I do actually only teach 8 people but thats my choice. If I can be of help please just ask. I have just been told I need a hip replacement so thats not good, but we will not dwell on any negatives, so here's the question; Why hasn't the overall average handicap changed in the last 50 ish years!!! We now have titanium heads, graffite shafts, better balls (excuse me) and video to review our swings yet the average handicap is still just about 20?? Any views I would be interested Cheers Paul |

I believe the statistics are, something along these lines..
Only 10% of all golfers ever break 100. Those that do break 100 only 10% go on to break 90 Those that break 90 only 10% go on to break 80 Those that break 80 only 10% go on to shoot level par
Therefore with more people playing, nowadays, it's hardly surprising the average hasn't changed. Infact I would think it's probably more likely gone up. Especially with the maximum handicap now being 28 |

As a bit of a statistician i believe I can explain:
Since there are a hell of a lot more golfers around nowadays, there are more sub 20 handicappers but there are also a hell of a lot more 20+ handicappers too... |

Better clubs better balls etc but ya can't buy a game....... Good coach, hard graft, and some natural ability helps more than the equipment. But yes, good gear will help to a point.. Say's he off 22 but hey I am diabetic......... |

It's all in the mind, ask Tim Gallwey, Michael Hebron, Dave Pelz, Fred Shoemaker, TJ Tomasi, Bob Rotella etc, etc, To become better is to get rid of "Ego" |

Becasue the percentage of golfers who play & practice enough to get below 16 has remained unchanged.
