Ben, there will be many who swear by them, but in over fifty years of playing this game I have never ever sharpened any of my grooves.

I find now that by the end of its flight the ball is pretty knackered and stops quick enough for me.

No point in hitting a shot short and then having it come back to you, all you need is one bounce and then check.

Hi Ben

Ive been playing 12 years and have never spun the ball back. I need all the distance I can get. However I bought a groove sharpener recently and after about 2 hours of tidying up my loftiest clubs. It didnt seem to make a blind bit of difference. Still hit the greens where I want on a good shot but still get a bounce and a run of about 3 yrds. I'd like to know if any high hcps are getting backspin coz I never could.

It's all to do with how well you hit the ball, David

Hitting it well is not the same as hitting it correctly Mr Marshall

David

I think i hit ball very well usually. Ball then turf every time. Big divots. Although I do use a fairly hard ball. Pinnical exception. I also dont hit the ball as high as i'd like. Maybe thats the reason.

OK...Hitting it well is not the correct term..

You have to hit down and through the ball. And it's not easy to do using hard balls
