Bag Configureation Advice

I've been playing a few months now and have decided what clubs I want to make up my 14, but could just do with a bit of a sanity check. I've listed my bag below but would welcome any comments, advise or observations on if I've missed anything obvious.

Driver: Cobra LD 10.5

5 Wood Cobra LD

Rescue Club - Mizuno MX 23 degrees

Irons: 4-9 + 4 Wedges PW, SW, 52 (gap), 58 (lob)

Putter

At my lessons the pro was a bit suprised that I wasn't carrying a 3 Wood, but I hit my 5 wood 220 and my rescue 200 so not sure if I should sacrifice my 4I for a 3W, or if I'm carrying to many wedges, although I do use them more than my 4I which I rarely take out of my bag.

Thanks in advance

You configuration is very similar to mine Matt.

I've been using a 11.5° 909D2 Driver.

I've got a custom 909F2 Fairway that acts as a 4 Wood.

I've then got a 20° Hybrid.

Irons I've got 4 Iron to Gap Wedge in AP2s.

Wedges I then carry a 56° & 64° Oil Can Vokeys for use in Bunkers and around the Greens.

For me this configuration makes the most sense, as before carrying a 3 & 5 Wood I didn't really get much difference between the two, and with my Driver at 11.5° now that was close in loft to the 3 Wood. I find if I need to get more distance from the fairway then what my 4 Wood can offer, I'll hit my driver again off the deck.

My Rescue then just closes the gap nicely between the 4 Wood and 4 Iron.

I have quite lofted wedges because I play a lot of shots into greens from inside 60 yards.

Looks fairly well balanced to me though a lot of wedges for a 26 handicapper dare I say it?.

Hi Matt, firstly, sorry for not getting back to you about the 3 wood, its a stiff shafted one I can get hold of unfortunately. Did you know that generally, the 23 degree hybrid is a replacement for your 4 iron?

Take what you feel comfortable with, personally I like a 3 and 5 wood.  I've got a 21deg rescue and 3I to SW and a 60deg wedge (yes 15 clubs).  3I is new and am getting used to it so take that or the rescue depending on how confident I feel.  Not a great fan of wedges myself, would rather bump and run than lob.

Good point Tim, Don't chip unless you have to go over something however sometimes I get the yips with my 9 iron from 20 yds which can result in me resorting to putting if on the day if I'm not confident using the 60* wedge also.

Hi Matt , your configuration is not bad but it all comes down to personal preference, carrying 4 wedges is not a bad idea, but wouldn't reccommend to a high handicapper, ( no offence meant there) i do carry 4 myself, varying 47 pw, 51 gap , 56 sand and 60 lob i sacrifice my 5 wood as i hit my long irons well, i dont have a rescue club as i found it was very similiar to my 5 wood, but i  do carry a 3 wood, but i can vary distances with it by choking down the grip ,240-250 all out to gripped right down to give me a 200 yard shot, so choice is yours ,but try and keep around 10 yards distance gap between your clubs it will bring your game on.good look with your progress in the game,

Cheers G

First of all thanks everyone for your comments and advixe. I',m new to both the game and this forum and if I can tap into the communities experience then that can only be a help to me.

Paul, no worries about the 3 wood, I'm still going to buy one although it won't make up part of my bag generally unless I decide I need it specifically for a particular course. I didn't know that the 23° Hybrid was a generic replacement for the 4I, although I can hit the hybrid 200yds and the 4I about 185 so the differentation adds value for me. I could get a smaller lofted hybrid, but I hit my 5 wood about 200 so I'm comfortable with the gaps.

I take the point from a few that 4 wedges seem to be alot (and no offence taken - glad of the feedback!) although I played yesterday and used all 4 clubs, with my LW (prob 10 shots played) being used most and  GW the least (prob 2 shots) and I don't think I would have used my 3 Wood more than once so am not sure how much value I would get by sacrificing a wedge for an additional wood. I feel like I can score better with the 4 wedges as I know what distances I hit each of them when I hit them properly, which is happening more and more, thus giving me a better chance to score at the business end of each hole.

The only real doubt I have left is am I carrying the right lofts on my wedges I hot my PW 110 - GW 100 - SW 85  LW- 75 (give or take a bit of variation) but wonder if I'd be better off taking a 64° LW instead of a 58°. I tried one at the range and was hitting it about 50 yds so this would give me more differentation through my wedges, although I'm pretty confident anywhere from 75 yds in with my LW.

Thanks again for all the advice, any further comments welcomed!!

Hi Again Matt ,

The lob wedge is great if you practice with it, i vary mine , ican hit consistantly 50, 60 ,70 + 80 yards , 85 yards is nearly a full swing ,but if you can practice and learn to control distances , wedges will compliment your game.my distances are 85-100 with sand , gap ,100-115, and pitch 115-130, if you learn the distances well ,you'll improve rapid, good look with your game,

G
