hi there lets talk about clubs now i play with slazenger panther x i got a JJB for 169£.when i bought then i,d never been on a golf course(started out on a big field just trying to hit the ball)so i thought to my self why pay 400 too 800£ for a set when i can try out low price clubs and go from there.

I,ve now been(trying)play this game on a course for about 18 month,s i remmember my first game well was 108 on a par 62(furzeley,hamps)it was bad.

Now after 18 months on the range(maybe twice a month)and 2 to 3 games a month im down to where i play good days 78 bad day 88.

All i really want to know is why pay top dollar for top clubs when i can play just a well with lower priced ones.

It's all about what suits the person holding the clubs. I hold a Taylor Made R7 Draw at address and it looks hideous. The price of these clubs now are around £250, so are competative when compared to the Slazengers you bought. I prefer a classic looking club, made from forged metal (cast steel just has no feel imo), with either a small cavity or full bladed head. These cannot be bought on the cheap, so paying top dollar is my only option. This is my experience anyhow, and hopefully answers some of your questions.

Congrats on the handicap deductions, and scores you are shooting these days. You've done well over 18 months

Buying premium clubs cannot guarantee a handicap reduction. My standpoint is that if the clubs cost £1,000, look terrible at address, feel like spades when you swing them, have no feel at impact, and have the wrong shafts for your swingspeed, then you have the wrong clubs, and your handicap is most likely to rise. If they cost £100 and feel great, and you play well with them, then your handicap is most likely to fall. It's all relative.

The difference is that a very well made set, made from a forged steel rather than cast steel, will carry a premium price tag. It's then down to the player to use the things properly to make his/her hcap drop.

I agree Jon - but to be able to get on with quality forged steel clubs you also have to be a good ball striker as well. I'm also a member of the forged club appreciation society as I do strike the ball well - even if it doesn't always go straight!!

My £30 second set of Donnay clubs work fine for me. Until I stop improving with them, I consider spending anything over £50 for a set of clubs a waste of money!

If money was no option then I'd perhaps think differently, but ultimately you should get what you can afford rather than breaking the bank in my opinion.

I'd rather spend my money on green fees than clubs!

Don't concern yourself over your clubs Mark. You seem to be making good progress with what you have got and when the time feels right (and you can afford it) you can branch out. I play with clubs that feel right for me and which don't break the bank. Feel and confidence is what counts. No one will get my Slazenger Black putter off me for any expensive alternative. Keep up the good play.

In response to Mark; I started playing golf when I was 12, and a member of a golf club till I was 21, holding a handicap of 5.6 at the lowest. I then quit playing until late last year. So, in total about 10 years of continuous play across a 19 year period.
