Today, for the first time i played off the whites. whilst i found it hard- but can now see this as the way forward for me. the course played totally different! i had to think about every shot. today has been a real eye opener, and unless the course is really busy in future i will be playing off the whites. i would recommend this to any high handicapper to at least give it ago, and see your true course!

i know most of the reguars on here will come back and say " we've been doing this for ages" but i'm sure this tactic well help novices out there. for anyone interested i shot 97 off a par 71, sss68.

many clubs/courses reserve the whites for competitions and frown upon there use for regular games.  We were specifically told not use the whites at one club. ( whittlebury)

It might be difficult to start from the whites at some places but from the second on I don't see how anyone would know any different.

obviously some clubs have this attitute towards regular games, but john as a point, who would know once out of sight of the club house. the only reason i played from the whites to day, was i played someone of a lower handicap who wanted to play off the white's, usually i'd never entertain the idea(too scared).

but how do these clubs expect you to gain the experience needed off the whites. play off the yellow's all week, then turn up for the first time for a medal/comp, where the rest of the field as experience off the whites, you dont have a chance.

so all i,m saying is i'd bite the bullit, sneak on if i had to, but i know in doing so my game will only improve.

I play off the whites whenever I play at Houghwood GC, which is allowed by the club. There are 2 tees that are even further back than the whites they usually use, which are reserved for club championships only. Those 2 tees would add another 120yds at least.

Yes, our course is a different course off the whites but I really enjoy it.

The secret for me is to remain within your game - if you can't drive 300 yards off the yellows you won't do it off the whites.

Must admit my new course hits you at holes 7 through to 10 off the whites at 441, 435, 523 and 537yds respectively and as it's generally windy anyway it certainly smacks you one.

But I still love the course

At my home club, Mapperley Golf Club in Nottingham, members are allowed to play off the whites markers at all times, so never an issue. The full distance whites or "tombstones" as we like to call them are reserved for major board competitions throughout the year.

Non members are only allowed to play off the yellows unless they are playing with a member then they too can play off the whites, but like John says if you get past the opening holes then there is not really anything to stop you playing of whites.

At my course only members with a handicap of 5 or under are allowed to play off the whites in general play. this was introduced so the course didn't get too congested & the competition tees were in top nick for comp days.

Playing of Whites is good, however playing of Blacks or Blues is even better (but a massize challenge).

A good course where you can play off Blacks is Carden Park (Near Chester), they have 2 x 18 hole courses (The Nickolas & The Cheshire Course). You are able to play off any time at any time usually.

Look up the course online and you can even use 2 for 1 vouchers at most times nad days!

These two courses are usually in impecable condition - The Nickolas is designed by the Golden Bear himself - its a true testemant to a great course
