Simon Howells![]() Handicap : 23.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Posted : Sat 16th Aug 2008 09:32 OK who is up for an event in the North of England? I would be willing to help organise something for between Sat 25th Oct and Sun 1st Nov (half term for me so i can definitely be available). Seeing as a Manchester event is too narrow I thought a Northern one would be a great idea. We could base it somewhere reasonably central to alow the largest possible entry. Emphasis would of course be on FUN! It could be a High Handicappers comp or open to all. Put your thoughts down below - on 1) Location, 2) Whether you can help organise, and 3) Who event should be open to. If we get enough interest I will open it as a proper event on here. Idealy gofshake registered players but if you have mates who can play that would be fine so long as you can cajole them into signing up on the site. |

Stephen Crowe![]() Handicap : 26.2 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Sun 17th Aug 2008 12:02 Am definately interested but would have to confirm when some details have been finalised as im self employed so time is money.... 1) Location, Ideally Greater Manchester but willing to travel if need be. 2)would help where I can but not no experience doing so (Newbiw) 2) Ideally no point playing against someone with handicap of 4 (Mine is 27.6) When im a beginner but again if the needs as to numbers say it should be open so be it... |

Joseph Chadwick![]() Handicap : 28 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Sun 17th Aug 2008 19:56 Im not much good at the game but would love to have a game. Like stephen crowe said, as long as the players aint playing off a low, low handicap i would come. Im coming from north wales so manchester, down to birmingham is fine for me. I dont mind the travel. |
John Spencer![]() Handicap : 17.5 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Mon 18th Aug 2008 07:41 I am happy to take part, i live in Sheffield, happy to travel (a reasonable distance), i could maybe get a few friends to join too. Im playing off 18. Not sure about what help you need to organise, i would have thought something like: 1. Limit event to 24 players (or how many you feel) 2. Book 6 Tee - Times (for the course you select) 3. Ask the course about extras (morning brunch, meals after, etc) 4. Post the event with directions, costs, course details, any comps, etc 5. Ask members to confirm asap and set final date to register for event. I reckon that should be enough, some courses ask for deposits for multiple tee times which will be rather tricky as you cannot guarentee full attendance even if everyone commits.
Good luck, if its inside 50/60 miles to me i shall make one. John |

Chris Perry![]() Handicap : 23.2 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Tue 19th Aug 2008 14:28 I'd be willing to attend if it's in the Manchester area Simon. Having been through the pain of organising one of these things, drop me a PM and I'll pass on the pitfalls I encountered. |

Stephen Crowe![]() Handicap : 26.2 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 20th Aug 2008 15:24 Mottram hall looks good mate what dates are ya thinkin now a few have gave dates they cant attend? is it one day event? |
Simon Howells![]() Handicap : 23.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 20th Aug 2008 16:19 Hi all, yes Steven it would be a one day event. What about Sunday 26th October or Sunday second November? There is a certain amount of flexibility, I'm sure you could stop over if you wished. Here are the details Mottram Hall emailed to me today: I was thinking the winter warmer package, views please folks? Bacon Roll Package |
Chris Perry![]() Handicap : 23.2 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 20th Aug 2008 16:31 I'm gonna struggle with the weekend of 18th/19th and 25th/26th Oct as I will be travelling to/returning from the US. Sun 2nd or Sun 8th Nov works best for me. I won't be selfish though so go with the majority Simon. |
Timothy Brown![]() Handicap : 16.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 20th Aug 2008 16:33 I would be keen to play - my preference is the Bacon Roll PAckage. Also I have played Mottram Hall a couple of times, and is a good course in Greater Manchester. Will the Winter Greens be on then though? You could possible collect monies through Paypal for deposits - set an account up and ask those interested in depositing monies there. With the balance payable on the day or a week before the event. Good luck with the organising |
John Pettitt![]() Handicap : 13.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 20th Aug 2008 17:22 Who pays green fees for winter greens, I most certainly don't. The greens are the most important part of the course and if they are no good then the golf will be no good. |
Simon Howells![]() Handicap : 23.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 20th Aug 2008 17:27 Quite right John, I've emailed them to ask. |
John Pettitt![]() Handicap : 13.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 20th Aug 2008 17:51 It really does amaze me that golf clubs still expect people to pay a full green fee for an inferior conditioned course. In the old days of course no one ever had to play on winter greens and I am fortunate where I am now that we are always on the regular greens and just as important, the tees. |
Stephen Crowe![]() Handicap : 26.2 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 20th Aug 2008 18:47 I can probably worj around the dates you set so count me in whatever they end up being.... Let me know how you want the deposit paying I could possibly bring three maybe four others of my skill level also |
Simon Howells![]() Handicap : 23.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 21st Aug 2008 16:15 From the horse's mouth: "We try to use full greens all year round here at Mottram. Obviously weather permitting I would expect the course to be on full greens during October and early November." So now we know. |
Stephen Crowe![]() Handicap : 26.2 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 21st Aug 2008 16:30 Cool, so how we doing on the dates then? you managed to pin point one in particular? |
Andy Edwards![]() Handicap : 28 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 21st Aug 2008 17:06 2nd November would be ideal for me, however as Chris says go with the majority |
Simon Howells![]() Handicap : 23.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 21st Aug 2008 17:11 Sunday 2nd October looks like the date, then. We need a few more definites so I can open the event! |

Simon Howells![]() Handicap : 23.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 27th Aug 2008 16:09 Just been down to the Venue to confirm it with them. What a gorgeous place! Looks fantastic, and suited to all abilities. Patrick down there was very welcoming and accommodating, and looks like we should have a great day. Saw David Lloyd of cricket/SKY fame in the spa too! Depending on interest we may well open more spaces as the comp has been very popular so far. We may also move the opening tee time back to 10:30 or so on account of the light. I will PM those who have signed up with payment details. Cheers Simon |
Stephen Crowe![]() Handicap : 26.2 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 27th Aug 2008 16:20 Cool mate sounds good. Are there any spots left? I have a friend who is interested??? |

Simon Howells![]() Handicap : 23.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 27th Aug 2008 17:22 Sign him up Stephen! Doesn't take long, and much easier to keep everything organised that way. |
Wayne Santorini![]() Handicap : 15.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 28th Aug 2008 10:21 Well said Simon, I've felt for a long time that as a minimum anyone wishing to join a local event should be a basic member, and for other events (golfshake day's) a premium member and then to attend an overnight golfshake event a platinum member. I'll start a new thread on this one. |

Simon Howells![]() Handicap : 23.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Mon 1st Sep 2008 19:14 De Vere Mottram Hall was No. 50 in Golf Monthly's list of 50 Best Places to Stay and play in GB & NI:
"An 18th-century Georgian country house, Mottram Hall lies in attractive parkland between Macclesfield and Manchester. The course was designed by Dave Thomas and features two distinct nines. The front side is played over relatively flat meadowland then, on the run for home, you make your way into woodland where play is over more undulating terrain. The rooms are beautifully furnished and there are four stylish suites on offer if you really feel like treating yourself. There's a spa and fitness centre, while clay pigeon shooting and archery sessions are also available. Nathaniel's restaurant provides fine dining using seasonal ingredients and Manuel the sommelier has built up a superb wine cellar." |
