David Marshall![]() Handicap : 9.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Tue 12th Aug 2008 14:33 Well done Tim... Deadly jealous of you...All the years I have been playing, and never had one...Been close a load of times though |
Kevin Hewitt![]() Handicap : 10.6 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Tue 12th Aug 2008 14:52 Well done Tim - I've only had one hole-in-one and it was an ugly thin on a par 3, just carried the pond and shot forward across the green straight into the hole, and cost me several rounds in the Club House afterwards as there was a large society using the course that fateful afternoon!! I'm still waiting for the conventional hole-in-one, i.e. one that is properly struck and hits the green first1!! By-the-way Tim how costly was your hole-in-one?? |
Wayne Santorini![]() Handicap : 15.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Tue 12th Aug 2008 14:54 Well Done Tim, no doubt you'll be paying for the shot of whiskey to everyone on the site in celebration seriously, nice one I like David have been close a couple of times but sadly not in, still I remain hopeful |
David Marshall![]() Handicap : 9.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Tue 12th Aug 2008 15:02 I guess it depends on the definition of close really... I would assume it to be around 1ft max, and just past the hole....Had one once that hit the flag stick, dropped and hit the edge of the hole and ran off 2 feet past. Then i missed the bloody putt for birdie. |
Wayne Santorini![]() Handicap : 15.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Tue 12th Aug 2008 15:10 8" is the Best I've had, the other couple have been ; Hitting flagpole and ending up 5 ft, and running up to pin but stopping 18" short. |

John Pettitt![]() Handicap : 13.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Tue 12th Aug 2008 19:35 I have been fortunate to have had three holes in one, the first at Colchester in 1955 when I sliced a three wood that hit a tree and bounced onto the green and into the hole. The second was at Whitewebbs Park Golf Club in Enfield where I did a Kevin Hewitt and thinned a nine iron that was going like and express train but hit the lip of the bunker in front of the green, popped up and rolled into the hole. The third was in actual fact a rather nice shot at the second hole at the Priors Course, Stapleford Abbotts in Essex, a nicely drawn six iron into a left to right breeze which pitched short of the hole and went in. Forty years between the lucky ones and the good one. |

Wayne Moore![]() Handicap : 17.3 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Tue 12th Aug 2008 20:57 congratulations tim hope it wont be the last. i was close this may gone on a par three at widney manor solihull, pitched five feet in front and ran 4 foot passed and like david missed the putt for birdie, gutted. |
Chris Perry![]() Handicap : 23.1 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 13th Aug 2008 03:51 Congratulations Tim. I think as a casual golfer you've achieved the one thing we'd all love to. Like a lot of people, I have come close too, twice in fact. Few weeks ago I pitched on the green, clipped the pin and rolled past by around 4 feet. And to keep in sync I also missed the birdie putt! Last year I hit the pin, dropped and rolled two feet away. Maybe one day. |

David Marshall![]() Handicap : 9.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 13th Aug 2008 10:15 John...1955 I didn't think golf had been invented that far back? That's before I was even born....And Perry calls me old |

Steven Watmore![]() Handicap : 12.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 13th Aug 2008 10:33 Nice one Tim. I've never really been close, i've had shots roll by within a couple of inches of the hole but non hit the flag or lip out, weird really as i have made eagles on par 4's. I have had a few on my Xbox though, less rewarding but cheaper bar bill ;0)

David Marshall![]() Handicap : 9.4 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 13th Aug 2008 10:53 Ah...Eagles...Now you are talking..Had a few of them...Genuine ones, I mean, not nett eagles. But not as many as my son has had. He had one about 2 months ago...543 yards, monster drive, second shot on the green six foot from the pin, holes the putt right in the middle of the cup. To make matters worse, he hadn't even played for about 9 months before that. |
Luke Tricker![]() Handicap : 18.1 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 13th Aug 2008 10:58 Congratulations Tim! I have also had a hole in one when I was 15 or 16, it was in a comp at my home course. As with Kevin, didnt hit it that great, but it did find the green, and more importantly, the hole! Whats more, as I was underage, I couldnt buy a round!! |
Stuart Govan![]() Handicap : 14.2 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 13th Aug 2008 11:22 Nearest I've had is an eagle on a par-4. 3-iron off the tee and a well struck 7-iron. At the Algarve last year (on my own, not with Golfshake) my 3-iron tee shot into the wind was going arrow straight for the hole on the competition hole where you can win a car if you get a hole in one. Pulled up six feet short, but I still got a towel for hitting the green! Missed the putt of course. |
Jon T![]() Handicap : 10.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 13th Aug 2008 12:13 First of all, congratulations on your HIO there Tim. I bet your knees were a bit wobbly on the enxt tee eh? The one I had was from the best struck 8 iron I'd hit until then. It never left the flag, and although we couldn't see the hole, the group walking off the enxt tee saw it drop. An exstatic feeling. The lip out for a HIO at Formby Hall when I was 16 was a killer. From about 170yds with a 6-iron, lipped out and finished 2" away, directly behind the hole. An easy tap in birdie, but oh my, what a feeling to hit such a good shot. |
Tim Mather![]() Handicap : 19.7 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Wed 13th Aug 2008 23:17 I must admit, that upon hitting the ball, I topped it, thinking to myself, what, how and balls I messed that up. But then I was watching it just go straight towards the pin, thinking to myself.....mmmm...its on target, lets watch it more, then it rolled up the fringe of the green, then onto the green slowing down, but straight at the pin (thinking to myself thats really on target) but I thought it was too fast...............then .... in it went!! I must admit I was totally gob-smacked!! took about 1 min before it sank in. The funny thing about this was my clubs!? I payed £420 for Callaways, however, I brought loftwedge for £20 and this was the club I achieved it with lol......pure skill I tell ya!.. |
Paul Williams![]() Handicap : 18.2 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Thu 14th Aug 2008 17:48 tee-ing off with a "loftwedge" thats a strange one! what distance was the hole? |
Tim Mather![]() Handicap : 19.7 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Fri 15th Aug 2008 09:33 it was 95 yards! the thing is that I'm a big hitter and that club suits me for short holes! |
Christopher Watmore![]() Handicap : 15.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Fri 15th Aug 2008 10:34 Reading this thread its great to hear so many people having holes in ones. However what I want to know is whether an Albatross could be considered a better achievement then a Hole in One. I've never had an ace but have come close several times now. I have however had an Albatross, holing my 2nd shot on the Par 5 2nd at Belton Park a few years ago. Now I always in discussions with friends, colleagues and playing partners state that the Albatross should be a greater achievement then a Hole In One as you are playing from a none perfect, tee'd up lie and with a yardage that is probably greater then most holes in one us amateurs will come across. However most people don't seem to agree, so whats the Golfshake Members take on this? |
Jon T![]() Handicap : 10.9 Location : ![]() Posts : | Reply : Fri 15th Aug 2008 11:32 They are all "achievements" where the ball is hit froma distance, and luckily ends up in the hole. They are lucky shots, simple as that. Whether one is a bigger achievement than the other, imo I don't think so. The difference between a HIO and an Albatross is the possible use of a tee, the yardage, and maybe the club used. |
