add one reason to the list as to why we're better, and keep the ball rolling. also why we hate southerners, lol   but keep it relatively clean as many a fight seems to have broke out in history.

Feel free to add some pictures to emphasise the fact that we have the sheer natural beauty, and they have... a couple of bridges and that complete waste of a hospital, the dome

You are certainly deluded if the you think the North is the only place that has scenery worth mentioning.

Having traveled the length and breadth of this Island of ours in a truck, given a choice of where I would want to live, I'm afraid the South wins hands down. My eldest son lives in the Peak district, a supposed area of natural beauty, but every time I visit, it just depresses me.

Trust the Twee to mention another country.

I thought the post was about the North / South divide of England.

Obviously the North is full of ########, well one of them is anyway.

And what's that Angel of the North thing all about anyway?  Now that is an eyesore

That is one monstrosity, for sure, David, but The city is very nice these days. The countryside is so depressing though.

The ############ bit refers to Southerners, Wayne is one of them.

That was because, none of the North, at that time, had responded

Sorry Wayne, didn't mean to get personal.

I'm not playing Graham, too many week day events ruin my holiday entitlement with the missus.

Darren needs to start thinking of having a weekend event now and then, after all they'd be plenty of people that could attend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll be in North Wales (Caernarfon) playing in the Captains Cup tomorrow so look out for the card appearing on Monday

I agree with that, the further away from the North the better.

David, perhaps we could have Golfshake on Tour to the Hebrides. Seems like the perfect spot, with 22 hours of daylight in the summer.

Reasons I like the South

Courses within 20 miles = 38

Courses within 50 miles = 138

8 mile stretch of soft sandy beach = 500 yards

New Forest 15 miles

The Purbecks 2 miles Assuming the ferry is taken at Sandbanks

Beautiful country walks and small villages 10 miles

Better climate, with more hours of sunshine and warmer weather

Case over ruled. Judgement for the South

Sorry Tim, My area is far superior in numbers and most definitely more superior in Quality. You are forgetting that Surrey and Berkshire is the home to nothing but high quality courses, not forgetting the weather to be able to play them all year round. No winter tee mats and definitely no winter greens.

Having spent 15 years living and working in Hertfordshire (or Watford if you're not posh) and Middlesex I can see both sides of this argument.

My partner, a wonderful lady from Hertfordshire, now resides in the north with me and it was her choice to move up here, she convinced me, and women are never wrong are they?

I moved up north with the missus. hated it.

We now live in the midlands, so a bit of a compromise. The only problem of course is our kids will have a brummie accent!

Still, at least I wont see them on jeremy kyle.

Hmmm, I was trying to say……

Meriden is traditionally the middle of the country.  However, the BBC worked with ordanance survey and found that the theoretical centre, including all islands, is just outside Fenny Drayton in Warwickshire, about 11 miles North.  The grid reference is 36373.66 96143.05.  For the engineers out there, this would be the centre of gravity of the country.  Perhaps this should be taken as the measure.

In this case, if an east-west line was drawn from there then Birmingham is just in the south with Lowestoft and Aberystwyth and Wolverhampton just in the north, along with Peterborough and Norwich.

However, I firmly believe it's where you are born, not where you live.  I also know that I'm a bit of a geek and quite sad.

Im sure I speak for all of us when I say that we appreciate the time and effort put into that explanation Chris!!!! An easier and slightly more contraversial way is simply to put a foreign exchange student in the room, anyone she can understand is from the south, anyone she cant is from the north!

Chris - only a bit of a geek on the geek scale.  Fenny Drayton won't be the centre of gravity of the country, all those hills in Wales will be heavy and East Anglia being as flat as a nuns t*t means it will be lighter etc:  Excluding Scotland I reckon the CoG would be in Macclesfield.

Thanks Tim.  I feel better for you saying I'm only a low level geek.  Obviously I wasn't taking terrain into account and only considering the country as a two dimensional mass (that means I was imagining it was flat for all you southerners).

Do you agree that it should be decided on birth rather than habitation?  Unless of course your granny is Irish which means you have the choice.....

Hey, you asked Alps!!!

Living in Bolton or Leicester you're just in the North mate.  Unless you actually live in Hinckley, and then you're in the South.  How would you feel about being a Northern spy?

Place of birth is what matters IMO.  I might live in Solihull, but I'm a Yorkshireman through and through.
