Personally i think the 18th at last years NvS venue Hellidon Lakes takes some beating.

Agreed, it was good, probably even more spectacular if it wasn't for the gloom.  The Forest of Arden is pretty buttock clenching, especially with a crowded summer afternoon clubhouse to aim at.

What about the 18th at the Belfry on the Brabazon. carry water with tee shot and then water with approach.

My butt certainly clenched until I put my second shot safely on the green 3ft away for a birdie !!!!!!

Agree with you Martin, it has to be the best around, for the south area I'd say Wentworth West course is another cracker.

My course at Branston is a great finishing hole. At 317 yards, water 30 yards in front of you off the tee, tight fairway. Large area of water in front of green with bunker traps around green. On top of all that you have got the club and large patio looking on. And in the summer there are a lot of people watching you trying to keep it on the fairway, and then get it over that water, It’s not the 18th at the Belfry on the Brabazon. carry water with tee shot and then water with approach. But its up there.

I think both 17th and the 18th at Wentworth must be the best finishing combination of holes in the country (run a close second by the road hole and the 18th at St Andrews)

Certainly great holes all round for "Risk & Reward" golf.

Best I've played is the signiture 18th at West Midlands Golf Club.  160 yard par three to a true island green that is situated right in front of the clubhouse patio.  Nothing but a tee, a lake, a green and a bridge.  Oh and lots of people seeing if your ball gets wet.

Yes Chris, good hole, its the copy of the 17th at sawgrass.

Colin i agree, and the 18th at branston is both.

The 18th on the Melbourne Course at Brocket hall was fun. Have to across the river on a ferry, to get to the green.

I think the best I've played is the 18th at the London Club, Heritage course.

The 18th at Cranham is like the 17th at Sawgrass....an Island, about 140 yards, and I always put into the water....

joking aside Phillip it could be that this hole is overiding your normal calm state and causing you to be wary of it before you even get there.

Try taking an extra club and 3/4 swing it for a more controlled flight, my playing colleague at my home club had the same problem but with a par 4 with a ditch half way along.

Couldn't get over the ditch cos his head had gone, I suggested something he should try (not that I'm good at that sort of thing) which he did and hey ho he got over it and has done ever since because he has now banished the demon hole to the waste bin in his head.

Good point, although a 3/4 swing for me tends to go wayward...usually all or nothing, but I will take it on board and give it a go!!

the 18th at Cranham is a pig. especially when your playing partner who has played there before forgets to mention that it is an island green and says its safe if you go long!!

I think for me the 18th at Staplleford Abbots in essex is great. 154 yd par 3 with 154 yds of water. great finish

Crondon is good. 618yd par 5 finish is a test if the ground is soggy. Hainault i have only played the upper course but really like that. Never played 5 Lakes but have heard good things.

Lakes course better than Links, greens receptive and bloody quick in summer.

I'll have to try and get down mate so we can play it

Bottom course at Hainault is better than the top course I think!

I found them to be equal although for differing reasons!!! if that makes sense.

Bottom is longer yet top is tighter.
