Bad news for me though.  Just been over the range and they were all snicking sweetly off the mat, straight as a die.  I also woke up with a good feeling about the competition.  So that's me out of contention and heading for a 120 round then.

Anyone know what the course topography is like? Just wondering whether to bother with the cart or not.

Front nine are undulating and the second nine are typical parkland. There are very long walks between the first and second and the ninth and tenth. I will need a buggy.

The weather forecast is awful with very strong winds up to 49 mph, so a testing day is ahead of us all.

My game has gone. Totally, utterly, completely.

I changed my swing, nine months ago, having videoed my original swing. Thinking that if I had a more orthodox swing plane it would improve my game, it has had totally the opposite effect. Now I need to revert back to my old swing, which although it may not be techinically correct, did bring good results. Now I find that there are so many swing thoughts going through my mind when i prepare to hit the ball I end up mis hitting the ball. Whereas before, I would just walk up to the ball, aim where I rougly wanted to hit it and swing

John Pettitt

Don't get depressed, David, it's only a game.

What you have to remember is that we do not hit the ball so far these days and when you look at that course, it has been designed for the young blood who hit the ball miles. I worked it out that the par for me was 85 as the par  fours were too long, apart from two, for me to reach in regulation figures. The same applies to the par fives, which were monstrous and required four shots to reach the green, assuming they were all well struck.

Just take the first hole, you hit a good drive and a great second wood and still did not reach the green.

Pars are based on being able to reach a green in regulation figures and have two putts. That was never going to be on for us old farts, against that wind on Monday. Forget about it, as it was just one of those days.

Even, Kevin, who struck the ball beautifully, had trouble, so why are you crucifying yourself.

That round is now history, forget about it.

It's not just the rounds on Sunday and Monday John...

It's the games we played together at Paultons Park, Silveremere then the 6 games in The Algarve. Plus all my other games at my course.

All I need to do is recapture my original swing. Even you would be amazed at how well I used to hit the ball, although you would definately tell me that my swing was not technically correct. The fact is it worked. I know I can hit the ball further and better than the last 2 days. This time last year my handicap was 9 and improving. I was consistantly shooting 80 or better now I am around 95 +.

23-Mar-2007655355442394344345543675106543

I am only mad at myself. The next 2 months is going to be spent finding my old swing. Then, if you are still around, I give you a proper game. And beware the next Golfshake event. Because "I'll be back"

Morning old people!  Stop beating yourself up David, we've all gone through blips.  I'd not presume to to question your depth of experience but you appear to be doing the same as I did last year - handicap dropping nicely and then I changed clubs and my handicap has steadily risen.  I know I can play better than I do (doesn't everyone!) but my head was getting the better of me.  It's been a depressing year but I think I can see the light at  the end of the tunnel and you know you will too.

Still, it was a good weekend, good course and good company.  Couple of good rounds and good to meet John, Stuart, Andy and Dave as well as the old hands Kev and David.

Thanks to Darren, Phil and Luke for the organisation too, flawless (almost) as usual!

Really disappointed I didn't do myself justice on the Sunday competition. Had a bad feeling in the nets before I tee'd off as I was S@~%$)(g my wedges.

However, that aside a really enjoyable experience for my first Golfshake.com event and the chance to put names to faces.

Hi all,

It was my first event as well and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Even though I struggled around the course yesterday - I thought the course was great with the greens in fantastic condition - too good for me this time of year though!! And the company was great and the event was run very well in deed, which is 90% of what its all about.

Thanks for the complements John regarding ball striking - I'll just have to perfect the direction in which the ball goes next time.

i can't make the North v South joust as I'll be on holiday in Cost Rica - but I'll definitely be putting my name down for the Northern Cup.

David, I have no doubt you were playing well last year and if you were to anlayse you play this last week-end, you will have to admit that in the main you drove the ball fairly consistent. I would have like to have been playing my seconds shots from where you were mnost of the time.

You also hit a couple of great second wood shots with that burner 5 wood, which tells me that there was not a lot wrong with your swing. You pitched the ball well and the only flaw in that was that you did not throw the ball far enough forward to the pin and as the ball was stopping instantly you were coming up short. This then puts pressure on your putting which looked to be pretty sound, but a few misjudgements in pace cost you a few three putts and very nearly a four putt.

I feel you biggest problem is in your head, as you seem to quickly lose the desire to fight after you have suffered a bad hole.

As you were mostly down the right of the hole and me down the left I did not see all of your iron shots, but the results showed that you were leaving them mostly to the right of the green and chipping and single putting was not prevalent in our fourball. That's how it goes sometimes.

Summer is coming up and we will get some games in and get you swinging properly, just like you used to.

Ignore me John..

Just having a tantrum with myself.  Going to pratice more, rather than just play. Then come  a nice warm Spring day I will take up your numerous offers to play at your course. It would be nice if Danny and Paul Mason could come too.

Or perhaps you should arrange a golf day at your club for Golfshake members. Now there's a good idea. How about it John?

I am pleased that you have at last seen sense, David. Have clubs will travel is my motto, but arranging a match does depend on those who have to go to work and whether they can sneek off or not.

I don't mind coming down nearer to you, perhaps we should arrange a game at South Winchester or I can contact you when we are going down next and invite you along.

David, just do what im going to do and put it down to the windy conditions!! It was tough going, especially on the monday, but im sure all of you who played will agree that the course was in really good condition. Hope you all had a good time, it was especially good to meet those of you who stayed on the sunday and had the pleasure of an impromtu swing lesson in the bar(after a few drinks), that came very close to taking out the light fixings!

Just thank your lucky stars I didn't have a pratice swing then Luke. Not only the light fitting would be gone, but half of the bar and the TV would be in pieces.

Seriously though. It was a good couple of days. Nice to see the 'old familiars' plus a whole host of new faces.

Diplomatic of you to avoid mentioning who was getting the swing lesson! Well I listened to all you wannabe Leadbetters and here is the latest swing. Don't know whether it's any nearer the correct plane but boy was I hitting it more consistently. Should be up on this site soon, but here's a sneak preview

Without Faldo, no one would have heard of Leadbetter.

I like the new tempo, Stuart, still bringing it round your ankles on the way up, although not so much as before, but still very much shut faced at the top, which as I said to you, I don't like to see. That of course does not mean that it is wrong, just the way I see it.

Your follow through is excellent in every way, balance being maintained, which tells me that the impact was correct. You will get there.

What am I doing to get such a closed face at the top? Too much wrist break? Too little?

I suppose to stop coming round my ankles I should be thinking of swinging straight back and up rather than round.  I thought I was doing that but obviously not enough.

Stuart...Sometime in the next 6 or 7 weeks. John Pettitt, Danny Brant (Shrek lookalike) and I are meeting up for a game. Why don't you come along too?  It will be in the London area.

It will be warmer, less windy and you never know I might just have my confidence back.  I played 9 holes, this afternoon, and went round 5 over. A friend of mine spotted what I was doing wrong straight away. My short game was on top form too.  What a difference a couple of days make!

Your swing looks much better. But tell me one thing..What was the ball flight and distance like?

Stuart Govan

Glad you played better David. Was this with the old clubs or had you gone out and bought a new set since I last saw you?!

Sure, I'd be up for another game.

Couldn't tell you the distance. They're relandscaping the range so there are nets 100 yards ahead of you. Shot after shot was straight as a die though, right out of the sweet spot. Out of interest I tried a few with the "old" swing, and was producing all sorts, shanks, tops, thins, the lot. Just like Sunday and Monday in fact!

Your swing looks more fliud. But like John said, you are taking the club on the inside and it's still too flat.

It was with the same clubs. Cheeky bugger!  Having said that, I am going to try out my back up set soon. They are the more blade like, and have smaller heads, version of my 990's.

My problem was twofold. Rhythm gone to pot and leaning into the shot. In other words, my same old problem too many thoughts going through my mind at address and I forget the basics. Then I get frustrated and lash at the ball, hence some of my sideway divots which John collected and took home to practice on.
