Got my Titleist 907D1 Driver on Friday afternoon. First impression for me was the heads a lot bigger and more Triangular then the Press Release Images show. The images give no scale to the immense size of this Beast of a Club. If it wasn't for the Square clubs released earlier in the year this would have been a real shock to me.
On first test I found this club gave me what I was finally looking for in a driver. Controllable Flight Height. I've always used Ping Drivers since taking the game up seriously and although they have been great drivers and I've hit the ball well with them, the concern I've always had is with each progression G2 to G5 and G5 to Rapture the clubs hit the ball higher and higher. Okay for High Handicap players to get the ball off the deck and give them confidence but for good players we don't need the clubs generating height. Into wind the Ping Drivers do tend to rear up and vertically and come up short.
This club like most Titleist Drivers hits the ball low and I found by varying the tee height I could hit low pentertating shots or high monster carries. Which finally gives me the confidence of playing in any wind condition as I now have the shots I want to hit.
The club also hits the ball very straight due to its high moment of inertia. Not to say wild shots are erased completely as I still managed to pull off some impressive pulls and some wayward blocks when I was tricked into thinking I could swing like a wild man and never hit a bad shot. With a good swing the ball doesn't deviate much at all. But when I tested further found you could still work little draws and fades with it if intended. So good players shouldn't be put off by the D1. I know the D2 is aimed at the really good players as its got lower MOI to enable shaping. But the D1 does allow some movement but offers solid consistancy on normal shots.
The only drawback with all these clubs is the price tag. At about £300 its not going to appeal to all golfers.
