This course had an attractive layout, even playing off the winter mats (which I must say were the best I've ever played off) was quite long, somewhere between blues and yellows. Greens are quite big, but apart from a couple had a good condition for winter. I got an online special for £9 and depsite the rain was excellent value. The fairways aren't vert tight and are forgiving, but with water or OB on most holes would punish very bad shots. The course was in generally good condition for the wet conditions. You do need to be striking the ball well to get a decent score. I play off 8-9 and scored 8 over, so a fair test.

Just one warning the former 18th has been split from a 600 yd par 5 to a 350ish par 4 and a 120ish par 3, apparently just whilst some remodelling goes on until april.

We played this course last week as they had an offer on for the World Cup, £25 per round instead of £50 (weekends £35 instead of £70). Although it is a new course, it is in need of a lot of work before we will go back. Possibly this was the reason we only seen 2 other players on the course during our round and it was a 10:00 tee time. When I asked the lady why it was not busy she replied, its because of the World Cup and the weather is too hot? I cant get my head around that one?

Before I explain our extremely poor experience, I will say that the course does have potential. There are some really good holes that require you to choose your clubs wisely and maybe in a year or two the course will provide excellent playing surfaces.

TEE BOXES

We played off the blue tees and found that everyone of them were uncut and too long. This led to us having to play with a raised tee on every hole. A lot of the tee boxes were uneven leaving the ball above or below your feet and approx 3 of the latter tees were positioned on an up slope?? On a positive, there were some very good picturesque tee shots that will make you think your way around.

FAIRWAYS

We found that they were very sandy with lots of bare patches. We found bricks/stones embedded into various fairways which have probably not been removed from the courses construction.

BUNKERS

There were no rakes for the bunkers. Probably because there was no need as the bunkers had weeds growing out of them and stones which would make most shots unplayable. There were also a very thin layer of sand in some bunkers as you could see where some shots had been played from and where the soil had been moved with the shot.

GREENS

The less said about the green the better. Long, uncut, small stones/slate everywhere, bald patches, weedy and even the holes had grass growing over the edges. The best green was a temporary green on the 13th, which we were not told about.

CHANGING FACILITIES

I think these maybe temporary as they are portacabins. They will do for the time being but could be cleaner. Toilets and showers were very dirty.

BAR/RESTAURANT

Atmosphere was a bit dull!! Not much happening there at the moment.

All in all we were very disappointed that we paid £25 for a round on a course that should not be letting anyone play never mind pay. We seen one member of groundstaff who was cutting a fairway but could have been putting his time to better use putting GUR marks around most areas of the fairways, bunkers and greens. Maybe costly buying the spray paint though.

We did not play the 18th as it was closed by the council due to residents complaining of balls coming over, again we were not told the hole was shut when we booked. We did complain to the course manager who gave us £15 each back and a free round on our next visit. Hopefully it will still be valid when we return as it will not be until we read some good comments on the course. Another pair of golfer were less patient than us and came off the course after the 1st and requested their money back.

If the groundstaff turn this one round it should be a great course.

Go and play it. I can agree with the previous comments having played it when new but now it's a lot better. It's not the finished article but the greens, fairways and tee boxes are unrecognisable from 12 months ago. £18 through the week 22 at the weekend. Noticeably dry a even after so much rain which has only done the course good.
Still take plenty of balls. Grab a bacon and sausage balm ( generous to say the least)
The shops beltin aswell.
A good course if u like your driver, yardage is tee to front of green and the greens are about 38 yards long each. think one is 49 yards!
It's had bad press but go and see it for yourself.

This is a bit of an odd course to review, and I would probably need to go back and play it a 2nd time to give a fairer assessment. On the day I played, it was intermitent rain and winds. The course is in a valley and is exposed to the elements and at times it felt like I was playing in a wind tunnel. The layout is a bit bizarre. Its plagued with water and hazards and holes require a bit more thought than average otherwise you can be punished for decent shots. The greens were average at best. Some where like playing on egg boxes and others were sandy and slow. The clubhouse is [apparently] due to open soon, and this will cause a layout to the course and will improve the facilites that are currently available [you currently use the driving range 500 metres down the road] The course has potential....but at present is a bit immature with young trees and no character. Id suggest playing on a fair weather day, as any wind makes it a total nightmare. Finally, they need to address the silly and frustrating issues such as a rake being used as a flag pole on one hole and no ball cleaners throughout. Its the little touches that make a huge difference. Overall, worth a visit if the tee times are as cheap as they were when I went. Otherwise, try elsewhere until the problems are ironed out.

Played the course for the first time today Tuesday 2nd may 2012. Thought I would give it a go as it's local and only costing £18. Stu in the shop was very helpful and gave me a run down on directions to the first Tee, the course was in very good condition , front 9 longish but forgiving, the back 9 was very nice and a bit more testing.I really enjoy my round and will be going back soon.

Course very well laid out but parts very unkept which spoils it i understand they have run out of money to finish the clubhouse off which is a shame as there is no where to have a beer and a meal when you finish just a cafe !!
Last time i went the club shop was very well stocked with very nice clothing and equipment but this time it was empty hardly anything in there

A new course that needs time to mature, but the foundations are there to be a great course. From the whites this course will challenge the best. Only needs the greens to be looked after a little better and this would get 5 stars.
A course where you truly will need 14 clubs.

Course layout looks really good on the eye but that\'s were the good review ends . Greens in poor condition plus 4 temps still in play which was like putting on wasteland .bare lies on the fairway sand in bunkers hard to find also . The club house is not open so you have to use the driving range facilities which are ok but not for a private course .disappointed after reading good things but will not be rushing back . Course needs a few years to mature but with lack of work going on by greenskeeper yes just 1 hard to c how it will improve .

Played this course today for the second week running, and despite the fact that it has that "Not quite finished" feel about it, I enjoyed it.

Hard to comment on the quality of the tees (on mats), or the greens (it was -3), but the course layout is good, and will be quite a challenge to play in the summer when you get the full benefit of a number of long par 4's.

Breakfast was good, so the only downside for me would be having to pay £22 each in winter, which is very expensive when you consider the prices for other comparable courses in the region.

Greens in poor condition, almost waterlogged after only relatively light albeit persistant rain. Poor signs, not that obvious were next tee is. 17th par 5 shortened to be 17th and 18th hole due to real 18th having work done on it. We were not told this when we booked! Temporary tees all poor, very small mats, not even levelled off properly . Facilities not great as clubhouse incomplete and closed. I will be leaving this a few years before even thinking about going back.

Very, very long. For a course that was in a terrible state 12 months ago it has come on to a decent standard. The potential is certainly here and it is very playable at the minute. Greens are huge and fairways often narrow. Both need work but no faults really for the age of the course. The owner is a very likeable chap and the staff excellent. I can only see this course getting better and better over the next 12 months. Great deals on membership as well. Prices reduced to £540 for 5 day and £720 for 7 day. Bacon n Sausage barms are great value and just as big as the course.

A New course and it shows, the green were shocking !!
A good layout that can only get better with age, tight narrow fairways and penal rough, make sure your straight or carrying loads of balls !
Even at the deal of £25 each there are better municipal courses local to St Helens that are in much better condition, make sure any fillings in your teeth are secure as the cart paths are very very bumpy, difficult to walk on, and shake your bag around so again make sure everything is secure, keep a look out for rutts on the paths and beter still in the rough, or you could end up with a broken leg !!

this is a developing new course, which when fully settled, will be one of the nicest and most challenging courses in the NW. It is long, has unforgiving rough(known as a ball muncher course), and large undulating greens.....offering a real challenge to avoiding 3 putts!
As a founder member, I am excited about the future of this course, along with the facilities that will be available when al the work is completed. If I can get to master this course, then my scoring on others will be easy!!!
my ratings are for a mixture of what it is now and what it will be......remember all courses take time to settle in!
