This is a parkland course with a lovely layout.
The only problem is that it is run by Brentwood Council! They just don't have a clue.
We played on a Saturday and the fairways hadn't been cut. There were times when we couldn't tell if we were on the fairway or not! The greens were very poor, very slow and bumpy.
If this was a private course it would be very good indeed.
Not particularly long but the 6th hole at 470 yards (par 4) is one to be played! It used to be a par 5 but they decided to make it a long, hard par 4. Shame they didn't alter the stroke index at the same time as this is by far the hardest hole on the course.
There is a cafe and a Discount Golf Store next to the clubhouse. You pay for the golf in the shop and they only take cash for the golf. You pay for the car park in June, July and August. Take you ticket into the shop and they knock it off the £20 weekend green fee.
This is worth a visit just for the nice layout, but be warned about the greens.

Essex parkland course. Council owned. Cut through the woods, so you will find the odd treee jumps out and gets in the way of your shot. Careful course management can save you shots.
Greens are a little rough but as good as you can expency from a muni.
Excellent pro shop run by Clearance Golf (discountgolf.co.uk), cafe etc.
For £21 on a Saturday morning I am not complaining.

Love Hartswood but was rather boggy this time of year. The greens were badly kept, very long and full of divots and plug holes.

Played the course 3 years after i 1st played and it was hardly recognisable. To say the condition was poor is an understatement. It was almost like playing on your local football pitch!. They have made some changes like making the 6th a 470 yard par 4 index 8!!. It used to be a par 5. Greens were very slow and bobbly and the fairways looked like they had not been cut for some time. Still a nice lay out though.

what a pity that this coarse used to be in such good condition that over the last year it has gone down hill so badly its as if the coarse has been left to defend itself to the weather on its own.when you go into a bunker its like playing out of mud rather than sand and as for the greens they are in the worst condition i have seen in ten years you cannot hit a putt without it bobbling around jumping about over the many holes. This coarse has so much promise but it needs looking after.

Parkland with mature trees, lovely course but first timers must play the course the way it is intended. Nice and easy round...
take care when crossing the road.
Beware public parking only with a small area for golfers to park.

This course has a good blend of easy and hard holes, its also one of the few courses that has dogleg right holes, which i like as i hit my woods with a touch of fade. The only problem with this course is playing in the winter or wet contions, as the fairway's can get a bit muddy and there are leaves all over the place making it hard to find your ball sometimes even on the fairway's. Its a great course but i would stick to playing it in the summer.

A nice layout, some good holes but tees and greens not good. Greens currently being treated.

Greens are suffering this year. Looks like pitchmarks haven't been properly treated over the winter, so very bumpy greens. It's a real shame because last year I loved playing here! £19.50 a round at the weekends

Greens have severe frost damage, the course is a good layout let down by the poor conditions (needs some good seeding and some sun)

Weather mats still out; greens not in very good condition, but still a good course to play and excellent value for money.

Difficult course to play as it get wetter and colder. A lot of mature trees means thousands of leaves scattered across fairways and greens. This made it difficult to find balls and judge putts. Will not be visiting again till spring.

On first visit I found this course to be an enjoyable round, with a good blend of challenge and forgiveness. As it is cuit out from a mature wood you need to be accurate from the tee but the fairways are generous in width. Sand in bunkers could be a little softer/deeper but for a public access this rates very highly. Will be a regular course for me from now on.

Course in excellent condition!
This is a municipal course and puts a number of Members courses to shame easily the best municipal course that I have played!
Also excellent value for money at £18.50 a round (weekends).

As usual course in very good condition and for the cost one of the best courses in the area. Public course but booking means it's not very busy unlike some pay and play courses. Greens and fairways in good nick. Only missing a couple of things. No real practice area and no distance markers which can be a big hindrance.

Hartswood is a council run course but is a very fair challenge. It is not a hard course but you need to plan your way round carefully and you can score a low score. There are some really good par 4's and the stroke index 1 is a 400+ yard par 4. The course is well maintained and good value for money.

A very well kept course. Still playing off winter mats on most Tees, but fairways and greens in good condition. A thinking golfers course for sure, with doglegs, bunkers and ditches to catch the unwary. Straight hitters will score better than long hitters as there are some tight fairways. A very enjoyable way to spend a few hours and only £13 to boot!
