Plastic Mats!
Unfortunately up until the Open next Year, you have to play off Mats on the Fairway & 1st cut.Wouldn't play until after Open

You pay for the name.
It's expensive, lets start there, you pay a premium for the name and the open rota status. If you look past the price, the course is fun to play and in generally good condition. The greens had recently been aerated and we didn't get told until we got there, which was disappointing. It's a classic stuffy UK club that gives you that slight imposter syndrome, jackets in club house, long socks etc. I personally came away wanting more from the experience. I've since played at Prince's next door and had a much more satisfying day and at less than half the price. It's hard to not recommend playing an open rota course but don't expect too much more.Reviewer Rating

Great Course - stuck in ancient times
This is an amazing links course host to next years Open. Everything about the course lived up to expectations. However, how archaic to put a group of 150 golfers crammed into the tiny Snack Bar after finishing the round rather than remove the stuffy requirement of Jacket and Tie in the main Lounge (obviously empty). This is not the way forward.Reviewer Rating

Not what I expected
This course is rated no.1 in the country & held several Major championships. Now don't get me wrong it's a very nice course & full of history. Just didn't live up to the hype. Played in the winter in the freezing cold 40mph wind which made it tough. Not impossible though & think on a summers day it could be got at. Needed a caddy which helped. Just not quite the picturesque scene I had hoped for. It's on the coast but can barely see the seaside. Bear in mind it's very expensive. I've played a lot better courses.Reviewer Rating

Overhyped
Clubhouse and facilities much smaller and less inspiring than anticipated. Jacket and tie requirement after 11am is a little pretentious for such a venue. Course was immaculate and greens very good but overall it lacks great golf holes. Bucket list course but there are much better courses and venues. Not a patch on Turnberry for exampleReviewer Rating

ite/productdetails.asp?id=19. I appear to be in the minority in considering the ranking to be too high. Yes, there is plenty of history, the course is a majestic links in places and is in great condition throughout, however, there are some ordinary holes, the scenery is ugly in places and the clubhouse is unwelcoming. For my own part, give me Sunningdale, Woodhall Spa, Walton Heath and others above RSG but this won't stop me seeking out the likes of Birkdale, L&SA, Liverpool etc for more links experiences.

Brilliant
I played it 4 weeks before The Open so pretty much as the professionals would. Brilliant to be able to watch The Open tv coverage knowing the course and comparing to how I played it.Reviewer Rating

Tough course and you have to plot your way round. Greens were very good. Not a very welcoming Club.

Pro shop and caddymaster very friendly and helpful. Everything in the clubhouse is very traditional - In this respect RSG doesn't do modern so probably best not to expect it to avoid disappointment. There are plenty of good places in Sandwich for food and drink if you forget your collar and tie anyway.
Excellent day out and worth paying to do at least once in a lifetime! Or twice...

turf
The turf is excellent to strike balls from, even in Winter. Greens were pure and rolled fast and true. The fescue was cut back a lot this time of year which means it played much easier for us than it would in the summer with less ball searches required, so an acceptable pace of play too.Reviewer Rating
