Long and undulating championship par 72 course designed by Tony Cashmore. Also has a nine hole course "the cups'" which is still challenging enough. About 10-15 courses in the vicinity of which this is arguably the cream of the crop and certainly best value for money. Voted #2 public access course in Australia. I have played all but #1 (in Tasmania) and it certainly is my favourite.
Several of the holes feature in the "top 1000 holes to play before you die," especially the par 3 17th and the amazing par 5 12th describes as "superb," by Nick Faldo.
Can be played at any time of year due to excellent drainage and plenty of water to be had, a rare commodity in the parched landscape of the Mornington Peninsula. I would highly recommend buying the Australian Public Golf Course Guide, a must-have for any visitors to Australia with discounts, 2-for-1 or free buggies to be had on most courses.
Best features:
Undulating and spectacular scenery - fast greens, expect to three-putt unless you can read a break!
Fair course design - a good shot is rewarded, a poor one punished. There are pars and birdies to be had but get greedy and it will severaly add to your score.
No hole is in the slightest part boring
Average round $40 Aus - play in winter and play all day.
Worst features:
Location not easy to find without sat-nav. Takes about 90 minutes from Melbourne CBD on a good traffic day, which is rare.
For God sake think twice if the wind gets up - not for the faint-hearted. Often deemed unplayable as the speed of the greens can allow roll on the ball if more tha a stiff breeze.
I'm nit-picking now:
Could seriously do with a few more drinks machines. Take plenty of water with you.
Rough can chew through your ball supply with wayward shots, take care.
In summary, one of the best courses you can play in the Southern Hemisphere and price is amazing. If you are in the area and don't play, more fool you.
