Fantastic facility with 3 great courses

Starting with the clubhouse ? this is really good, and I've been here for various reasons, including on a training course organised by England Golf, so there is a lot more to the facility than most people are aware of. Conference rooms etc, and a few dining areas and little nooks where small societies can meet up for pre or after round get-togethers. The food is excellent, if a little expensive, but we were there to make a day of it, and had allowed for this extra cost. Changing rooms are large and clean, and well laid out. The pro-shop is very well stocked, but again a little on the expensive side; e.g. a plastic poker chip marker cost ?4.00, whereas most other courses I have got these for around ?2.00.
Everywhere we went, we were greeted with a smile, and all the staff were very helpful if we had any questions.

Practice facilities at Woburn are first class, so if you're playing any of the courses - give yourself time to check out what is available. I bought the course guide at a previous visit, and it was expensive at ?6 per course, and not particularly well designed (yardages from the back tees only) Distances on sprinkler heads are all to front of greens, and there is no system to show how far on the green the pins are.

We were greeted at the first tee by the starter, who asked if we had played the course before ? 6 of our party of 8 had done so, so he did not inundate us with information we were already aware of. We were advised that because of recent rain, the normal distribution of pin placements (which is shown on score cards) was not being used, so the holes had been cut wherever the greens were driest. He also advised us there was a group of 40 about 3 holes in front of us, and we almost caught them up on the par three 17th, but the pace of play was totally acceptable. Our party did include a couple of 20+ handicappers, so we were probably slower than we could normally be, and indeed around the end of our round, a group caught up with us. However; we never felt as if we were being rushed at any time.

As expected, the tees are perfect, and of a large enough size to keep moving the daily tees to keep them that way. Fairways were a little wet following some heavy rains during the week before we played, and resulting in very little run on the longest of Woburn?s 3 course. We were also advised at a previous visit that the Marquess is the worst draining of all 3 courses. The recent rains made the greens very receptive, but did little to slow down the puts, with a number of 3 putts being the result. The greens have some quite wicked slopes on them, not all of which are obvious until you see your ball taking an unexpected turn. I had a bad day with numerous bunker visits, starting at the 1st hole, but all the bunkers were perfectly raked, with a good layer of loose sand to play a proper bunker shot from. Those shots which dug took deep hit harder sand, and were punished because of that. I find the overall layout of the course to be very interesting, although being in the middle of many pines, I can understand if some visitors find each hole very similar.

We saw quite a few greenkeeping staff around, but none interfering with pace of play, which helped us concentrate on our game.

Overall, I like this course and would recommend and play again, but having now played it 3 times in a row, I think I would like to revisit the Duchess and Dukes courses on future visits

I should add to my review that this round was played quite some time after trying to fit in a free round (for 2 of us, with guests to make the party up to 8 players) following Marshalling duties at the AIG Womens Open in august 2019. Our first attempt to play came amid Covid problems in October 2020, and was then interrupted by thunder and lightning, resulting in waiting another year to fit the round in. Paid slightly less than member?s guest rate, as a consolation for the delays in getting our round in.

Played late March on a free round for being a marshall at the British Masters in 2015. The Marquess was the only Woburn course I had not played, and 3 of us took it on in slightly wet conditions.

Warned by the starter that this is the worst draining course of the 3, we found it quite long, and hilly enough for my electric trolley to be almost drained at the end.

Tees and greens were obviously excellent. Fairways less so, with some patchwork apparent. We were also told it was being prepared for the Ricoh Ladies Open at the end of July, so it has some time to get up to scratch.

Only visited one bunker, but it was perfect. Greens were very quick, and with some vicious slopes, resulting in 38 putts for me.

Practice facilities at Woburn are first class, so if you're playing any of the courses - give yourself time to check out what is available. Course guide was expensive at £6 per course, and not particularly well designed (yardages from the back tees only) Distances on sprinkler heads are all to front of greens, and there is no system to show how far on the green the pins are.

I love the courses, but overall they are too expensive for the average club golfer; especially pensioners like me!

A true test for all levels of players on such an impressive course. Tight fairways call for a good, preferably straight, to give yourself a chance of hitting the green in 2 on the Par 4s. Strategically placed bunkers are not always visible on your approach shot to the green, so course management is a necessity. The greens are excellent and not always the easiest to read, whilst being very fast.

I cannot speak highly enough about this golf club, it just oozes class without the snootiness that some golf clubs breed. Friendly helpful staff create such a welcome feeling and the marshals are a big comfort and always happy to have a chat.

The course is stunning. The first 5 holes are as good a start as I have ever played. Walking up the 4th feels like playing Augusta. The fairways are like a carpet and the green are perfectly true. Between holes 7 and 11, the course becomes more like a great course instead of a world class one but nearly all the holes challenge something different.
The feeling from the members was fine but some of the green staff and people around the club seemed less friendly and sterile, more so the management than the pro and waiting staff.

I played the Marquess yesterday as part of the IL Stein foundation charity day. What an absolute pleasure to play a course of this standard - easily the best course I've ever played. The layout is incredible - a real test of your golfing ability with it playing very long but also needing good course management.

Marquess Course

I had been to Woburn a few times to watch Pro Tournaments - most recently the Women’s British Open - and always thought it would be fantastic to play here, so was delighted to be asked to take part in a charity golf day on the same course, just 3 weeks later.

Obviously it looks a lot different without the grandstands, but imagine the tall pines that line most holes as spectators and you could almost be playing on Tour.... until you reach the green and realise that your game is nowhere near that level!

Understanding those greens is key to playing well on this course. But the Pro’s have caddies who know this and they are able to send their ball to the right place. If you’re above the hole, 3 putts are always a danger as it’s hard to read the subtle breaks which can send your ball way off track, or off the green one time for me!

After the round I heard someone say they had 15 x 3-putts, which made us all feel better, but it does make you realise just how talented the Professionals are.... although on the way to winning the WBO, Hinako Shibuno did 4-putt the 3rd hole in her final round!

Woburn is everything I expected and more. Yes, it costs more to play here but this was a truly memorable day, superbly organised by a charitable trust that I’m very pleased to have been able to support.

Marquess and Dukes

Brilliant condition for the time of year, greens as close to perfect as you can get, BUT... no pin positions given at the start of the rounds, and no coloured flags to indicate. Not what you expect when you spend a fair few quid on a green fee.

Absolutely beautiful course and club. Would love to play the other 2 courses. Every bit as good as I was hoping. No bad holes whatsoever, for me the 4th takes some beating, uphill dogleg left in complete tree-lined seclusion, completely stunning hole. Condition of the course excellent throughout. It's long and difficult but that doesn't spoil the enjoyment one iota. I actually played OK for a high handicapper, my score would have been nearer 97 on the courses I usually play.

Wonderful course which oozes class. While not as tight as the Duchess, every hole is tree lined and errant tee shots generally punished. Great variety of holes. Greens are fast, true and sloping (downhill putts can be terrifying). A must play for anyone who loves their golf.
