This review is for the PGA National.

I have to admit, I was very looking forward to playing the PGA National. With a course the PGA put it's name to and somewhere as grand a location as the Belfry, with all it's Ryder Cup pedigree, expectations were high.

Arriving at the Belfry it doesn't do anything to dampen those expectations, the complex is very impressive and the golf shop is well worth 10 minutes. The history is well displayed and there is a comfortable bar area for a pre-game coffee. The coffee is very expensive though at £3.95 a cup. Although of decent quality.

We headed off to the range, which it describes as "World Class" It's a decent range and the golf balls are generally better quality than your average range. But there was no real targets to aim for. No flags, no chipping baskets etc.

The PGA National itself was very disappointing. The course was very wet and bar the first two holes and the last three, the course is very dull. I can see what they have tried to do with the inland links. But the grass is poor quality and reminiscent of a sheep field that's mown well.

The Greens are good, they are fast and plenty of borrow. But you have to hit the middle or they will definitely horse shoe out.

My biggest issue with the round was the speed of play, over 25 minutes per hole wait. There was no evidence of The Belfry marshalling slow play. They even let a four ball out with two people sharing a bag.

In my view the whole experience is ruined by corporate traffic. Golfers who don't play regularly but want to take part in team/ business days who don't stand a chance on a course like this. They then wait for golfers to clear the green 200 yards away and can only reach 120 at best.

The course itself needs some maintenance, the ball cleaners do not have water in, the tee boxes covered in broken tee pegs. Cans of stella laying on the fairway.

It's not what you expect and if I had paid £80 for this round instead of the £45 winter fee I would have been very upset.

In summary, the course is trading on it's name, if you get a deal then go for it. if not, stick to your local club. it's probably better.

N.B There was a trolly ban when we played, which was completely understandable with how wet the course was. If it's been raining, pack a small carry bag as well just in case. There was a lot of people lugging around heavy trolly bags which also slowed down play.
