St Mellion Golf Club
Set in 450 acres of stunning Cornish countryside, St Mellion International Resort is the leading venue for golf and the perfect destination for both business and pleasure. With its two championship golf courses, including the UK’s first Jack Nicklaus designed ‘Signature Course’, one of only three in England; this famous West Country resort has hosted the Benson & Hedges International Open on six occasions and most recently the English Seniors Open, firmly securing St Mellion’s position as the finest venue for golf in the South West and as one of Europe’s premier resorts for both golf and leisure.
The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course
The first European course personally designed by the 18 times Major winner, Jack Nicklaus, was officially opened at St Mellion on the Devon Cornwall border in 1988. To celebrate the occasion a USA vs Great Britain match was held and screened live on the BBC, with Nicklaus himself partnering Tom Watson against Sandy Lyle and Nick Faldo, with Britain coming out victorious. After the occasion Nicklaus was quoted “I knew it was going to be good, but not this good….it’s everything I hoped for and more…St Mellion is potentially the finest golf course in Europe”.
Nicklaus’ belief proved to be well founded as the course went on to become a stalwart of the European Tour, hosting the Benson & Hedges International Open on 6 occasions, The Midas English Seniors Open on 2 occasions and confirmed as the host for the English Open for five years on its return to the tour in 2011.
Even for Jack Nicklaus the course is unique, benefitting from the exceptional South West topography. It has its own Amen Corner not dissimilar to Augusta, including the signature hole 11, a daunting but stunning par 3.
The course has been a regular fixture on the UK Top 100 and narrowly lost out as the host venue for the 1993 Ryder Cup. It is also regarded as second only to Carnoustie as the most difficult golf course in Great Britain.
The Kernow Course
Originally designed and set out by J Hamilton Stutt in 1976, it soon became recognised as one of the finest courses in the South West, playing host to the Benson & Hedges International Open in 1979, followed by the Tournament Players Championship and the Weetabix Ladies British Open.
With the arrival of the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in 1988, the Kernow course was somewhat overshadowed, until in 2008 it was completely redeveloped, incorporating 9 of the original holes, extended and modernised, along with nine exciting new holes. With wider fairways, larger greens and spectacular views the Kernow course is a wonderful complement to the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course.
The new layout includes the 7th, a par three measuring over 200yds, followed by a stunning new 530yd par 5, while the outstanding 179 yd par three over the chasm has been incorporated as the new 14th hole and the 18th hole now brings your round to a close at the club house.Contact Information

Really nice course. Some interesting holes and is the perfect practice round for an assault on the Nicklaus course. Given the rain it held the water better than the Nicklaus course and would love to play both courses again.

A recently modified championship course. The layout is excellent with plenty of open fairways with a challenging par 3 across a lake. A little pricey per round but good value on a two for one option.

the change from the "old course" to the "kernow" has made little difference but has changed a few holes espeically the 2nd which is no longer a par 3. The Nickalus course is just awesum...every hold has its problems for any average golfer....just dont use that driver because you think it is a long way...play safe...always

Good resort golf courses with expected facilities. The old (Kernow) course still needs to be finished as 2/3 temporary tees/greens. The Nicklaus course is excellent and chllenging.

What a fantastic course. The toughest I've ever played and the most enjoyable. Tight fairways, tough greens and a fantastic setting. I must play it again and superb value under the 2fore1 scheme. Thankyou Todays's Golfer! Gripes - well it had rain very heavily the day before and some of the fairways were soaking in mid August! Could drainage be looked at? Had to drop twice out of casual water. Plus the changing facilities resembled Churchil's bunker - expected a bit more there. But I'm nit picking really - definitely a course to play before you die!

Returned here nearly a month after playing the excellent Nicholas course only to be very dissapointed by the Kernow course. As I was on my own I wasnt able to play the Nicholas course, which last time I got a late tee time at £30, this time I had to pay £40 to play the Kernow. I can see they are building some new holes but in the meantime the back nine is a farce. There are temporary green on 16 and 18, the tee markers are for different holes, and some holes just seem to be squeezed in to make up the 18. As a 17 hanicaper I shouldnt be scoring 7 over, didnt play that well, but setup like this its very easy, not a proper golf course with a par 3 every second hole.

We got a very late tee time on this but therefore got a brilliant price. This feels like a very pro course, likened to Wentworth. Stunning course and an amazing challenge, you can get punished for good shots. I think the front nine is alot more difficult and you really have to pick up shot from good positions, if you dont make par from the centre of the fairway it maybe 1 or 2 more holes before you get another decent oppertunity. The club pro, who was very welcoming, says that people come back here every year to test themselves. Well I will go back again and should be able to take of 10 shots now I know the course.

The 'Old' course is being developedinto the new 'Kernow' course. So is a bit rough at times (whichiswhy I have givenit a 'fair'), that said,it is still a pleasure to play, and I look forward to playing the finished course, when I would have togive the course a Very Good.
The development of the facilities is very 'Meditteranian' but still within character. Redevelopement has really enhanced St Mellionfor the better. The Course

This is the "flagship" venue of the Crown empire. There are 2 courses - Kernow (the hotel course) and Nicklaus (the championship course where the pro's are due to return in 2011). Great value at £0 for us Crown members!
The Nicklaus is fabulous but a brute - narrow undulating fairways, thick rough on steep surrounds, plentiful water hazards and tricky greens.
The Kernow is currently being redeveloped so suffering from a preponderance of par 3s and some temporary tees/greens - it should be finished by next summer. The Course

Sadly, this review will not do St Mellion justice, as I have played it in the past and it is top quality.
This review is based on a round played recently during a rebuild to the course in preparation for the English Open next year. A fantastic venue, but I recommend you leave your visit until all work is complete as it's a bit of a mess and the holes available can be half complete. Check with the club or website before playing. The Course
