Construction of Southern Valley began in January 1998 on 138 acres situated in Shorne just south of Gravesend in Kent. The site was originally Gravesend Airport, which was actively in use during the 2nd World War and overlooks the Thames Estuary. The course has been designed and built in sympathy with a traditional Links Course. It features large greens and tees and undulating fairways. The subsoil is predominantly chalk and this provides excellent drainage conditions. The tees and greens have been built to the most modern specifications and this ensures no temporary tees at any time of the year. As the course if young, the landscaping still needs time to mature, but 30,000 gorse and broom plants have been imported and this enhances the feel of a seaside links. Since opening, improvements have been made. Additional bunkers have been added and four new back tees have been built. This is part of a long term plan to improve the course. 18 holes. Par 69. 6211 yards. Links-style Parkland.

Directions:
From London/M25: * Proceed along A2 coastal bound, past Gravesend. After the Gravesend East turning, you will come across a “Little Chef Restaurant” and an Esso Garage on your left. * Immediately past these, there is a slip road sign-posted to “Thong/Chalk/Inn on The Lake Motel”. * Proceed up this slip road and at the T-Junction (Inn on The Lake Motel is facing you) turn left into Thong Lane. * Proceed along this Lane for approximately 2/3’s of a mile, until you approach a housing estate on your left. * Immediately opposite the houses at the start of the estate, the entrance to the golf course is on your right, opposite Vigilant Way.

Southern Valley is a proprietary owned club, situated in Shorne just south of Gravesend in Kent and opened in June 1999. The course has been built to the highest standards and designed in the style of a traditional links course.

Played this course for the first time yesterday - a chilly but clear,sunny day. Wonderful views. Apart from the pro-shop, didn't use the clubhouse, but it does look spartan. We found the course in pretty good condition and could find nothing wrong with the greens. The fairways drain rapidly and the lies thereon are tight, so good ball striking is essential. I can see this being especially so in summer when the chalk soil will be like concrete - but then your ball will roll a long way. Some of the bunkers are deep and vertical sided, so beware. Some nice par threes with menacing bunker positions.

Four us us were playing this for the first time and all will be returning.
