The course plays longer than its absolute yardage suggests. It has a par of 69, including just one par 5, and measures 6546 yards from the back tees (SSS 71). Being set high up on the South Downs the wind is nearly always a significant factor. Similarly the rapid drainage of water through the underlying chalk ensures that the course is rarely closed for play in winter while providing a different challenge in summer with firm fairways and greens.
Designed in 1907 by J H Taylor, five times Open champion, the downland course has stood the test of time. There has been one major revision to the layout in 1911 otherwise it has remained unchanged apart from additional length and some modifications to bunkers. Being set high overlooking the English Channel the view to the east is the start of the Seven Sisters and to the west the Port of Newhaven. Inland there are views across the Downs and to the walking territory of the South Downs way.
The course has one par 5 (555 yards) and seven par 4’s over 400 yards and a total yardage of 6546 (SSS 71) - from the visitors’ tees the yardage is 6234 (SSS 70). The wind is frequently a significant factor - for example, the 9th one day can be a drive and a wedge but the next day will be two full shots to reach the green.Book a Tee Time

Nice course in good condition. Made easier by the fact that it was dry.

A proper golf course that tests every club in the bag. Quite long in places but good shots are rewarded, nice greens and always in good condition. You will not get near your handicap if the wind blows.

This is a very nice course in excellent condition. The weather was beautiful which helped. I found it quite tricky as a 28 handicapper but felt better as my friend also struggled as a 16 handicapper. You need to be straight off the tee as you could lose a lot of balls if you miss the fairways. Greens are lightening quick but I really enjoyed putting on them (and putted really well on them).
