Beautiful "Open" Course

Played on one of the spectacular "summer" days at the end of February, so got lucky for the time of year. Just pulling into the car park felt special enough, to see one of the iconic homes of the famous Open Championship and knowing we were going to be walking the same fairways that the greats had done is actually a very intimidating but incredibly exciting experience. The course is beautiful. It's definitely not the hardest test without the strong winds that the region is famous for, but it's still testing enough! Standing on the first tee outside the famous clubhouse with a few other guests waiting for their turn is also quite a nerve-wracking moment! Thankfully the hole doesn't suit a driver off the tee so you can more confidently hit a safer club without looking like a chicken! There are some wonderful parts to the course, especially as you go out around 8,9,10,11, and 12. You have the sea on your left side for views and I imagine when the wind blows, these holes play completely differently!

This is not the cheapest course you will play and in terms of value for money, on the golf side, there are definitely better courses to play for less money, but you can't really put a price on the history of the place and the sheer joy of playing a course you have seen played by the pro's up close on a tv screen. I'm glad I have done it. Not sure I would go back and do it again. One to say I've done, but for the money would look to play another of the old famous courses.

I was delighted to get to play Hoylake again, now for the 3rd time, but with a year or so since the last time. I have to say that I can see what people mean when they say it grows on you. Playing the course with some prior knowledge of where you need to be on the fairways to get the best shot at the green and how to avoid the killer bunkers really makes a difference. Talking of the bunkers, I managed to go in less this time, but when I was, I have to say the condition of them is second to none. There are no complaints or excuses when it’s a struggle to get out. Another thing I had in mind was that the 11th is a lot more challenging once you know more about it. It looks idyllic perched on the edge of the Dee Estuary with fantastic views 360 degrees around. Don’t be fooled, this is a tough Par 3 and a real highlight of the round. The other stand-out hole for me was the all new green on the 17th. I say green, but actually the new angle of attack makes it feel like a completely new hole... and a great one at that. It’s a tough landing area, with some intelligently placed bunkers and roll-off areas that offer a premium for accurate long iron play. Overall, I love playing at Hoylake and I can’t wait to get fit again after my knee operation and get back out ahead of the Women’s Open next year.

I agree that Royal Liverpool is a grower, it can sometimes come across as unassuming and a little flat in places for a links. However after a couple of rounds it's clear why this is a classic, it's a real shot-maker's course. It's tough but fair, good shots are rewarded as well as bad shots penalised. The condition is always first class and the recent modifications have worked really well including an extremely challenging new 17th green. Stand out holes include the 1st, 5th, 11th, 12th and 16th. Before you leave, check out the museum-like clubhouse, full of memorabilia and historic golfing firsts.

Stunning place.

So much history, everything you’d expect from an open venue.

Tee boxes are better then most greens around the UK.

Fantastic Open course

If you want to play a British Open course this must be one of the best. Although we had rain and wind, the course played fairly and the condition it was in was amazing. A very warm welcome from everyone at the club too. If you get the chance play it.

Wow. Just played the 2022 Open venue!

Arrived with great excitement to the car park - picturing where Rory drove himself up when he won in 2014. The day was full of Open memories o the course and of course in the amazing clubhouse - absolutely crammed with Open history. We all loved deciphering the players' signatures on the winning photos when Rory and Tiger won - great fun.

The practice area is excellent - a good 5 minute walk to the iconic practice area which impacts holes 1 and 16 with OOB. And what a back drop it provides to aim your practice shots at the clubhouse.
The course was amazing helped by the hottest day in February ever and only a 1 club breeze.
I agree with some reviewers that it is a pretty flat course, And at times the course feels like it is simpy carved out of a field. But the condition is beautiful. Amazing greens fairways and tees.
Favourite stretch for all the party was 10-12 along the coast line with the lighthouse in the background and the coast line to your left. The signature par 3 11th was just breath taking and followed by memories of Tiger holing out on his approach from the 12th fairway in 2006 is just an amazing feeling to walk in his footsteps.
Although the end is probably the weakest part of the course - who cares. The whole expereince is just magical.

We booked with county cards and played an Open venue for £55. Come on!

Only slight gripe - with the Walker cup looming in September they have rebuilt many of the revetted bunkers so most were understandably GUR (which helped!) and they are protecting landing areas on the fairways so offered little mats to play off to protect the fairways (maybe a feature of the area as we played Wallasey on day 2 and they did the same).
Just go play it!

Walking among history

One of the oldest clubs in the area , the course is smaller than it looks on TV but is very hard when the wind blows. We played on next to no wind but you still had to club up maybe one or two clubs at times. The rough and gorse is tough in places and of course a bunker will punish you. The views across to North Wales are wonderful. The greens were very true. The staff in the club house were very friendly and helpful. Take time to explore the clubhouse , its fantastic , loads of history. No matter what the price its worth a visit.

Royal Liverpool is one of those courses that grows on you the more you play it... It is a truly magnificent test of golf for all handicappers, but probably best to play the Yellow tees for handicaps over 16. I feel honoured to play their every week.

Played in the Macmillan cancer charity day. Beautiful day and the course was great. Tough course for high handicappers, especially the bunkers but a great experience to play one of the UK's open championship courses.

Outstanding course well deserved of championship status. Despite quite heavy rain the course remained in good condition and the drainage is excellent. Well recommended during autumn and winter.
