The Championship Course at the Macdonald Portal Hotel is relatively unknown to a wide audience, but having opened in 1990, it is one of the best courses to be completed in England in the modern era. In fact, it was named ‘Golf Course Of The Year' in 1995, and is the star of Portal's golfing complex. Designer Donald Steel has created a challenge that is characterised by unique and distinctive holes; expansive water hazards and cascading waterfalls are among the tests. The signature is typical of Steel's magnificent 7,037 yard layout - the long third tips the scales at 607 yards, with a green guarded by a beautiful lake.

The Premier Golf Course at the Macdonald Portal Hotel is home to the Lee Westwood golf school. The course offers some stunning scenery and some great holes to go with it. Overlooking vast Cheshire plains this is a beautiful golf course and will challenge all levels of golfer.

The Arderne Course at the Macdonald Portal Hotel is a 9 hole par 30 golf course and is a fantastic test of your short game. The course comprises of 3 par 4’s and 6 par 3’s and has a total yardage of 1724. There are two sets of tee’s so this course can be played twice. Beautiful course, true greens, great fairways and a fantastic character par 3 to challenge all levels... If i could just have bought a putt somwhere it would have been a pretty good round too.

Fantastic course for £23 a round. Thoroughly enjoyed the round with some great looking holes. As per another reviewer, the greens are in top condition and extremely fast so you need you A game when it comes to using the short stick. I would highly recommend this course as a must play.....I certainly will be playing it again!

great golf course set in rolling cheshire countryside with some fantanstic views. some good risk and reward holes although course can get very busy with corporate visitors.

played the championship course yesterday, was impressed, the shop was ok and the chap was friendly enough, good practice facilities, the area and course design was excellent, the only draw back were the greens they had been forked but were in desperate need of rolling, not sure if they were working on them but they were very soft, it made putting outside 4 feet impossible, other than that nice course would probably go again if the greens were rolled, was good value because paid 15 pounds

Fabulous venue, the Championship course is excellent. More enjoyable in a buggy as its a bit up and down. You will enjoy this course especially on a nice day where you can see 5 counties from the top.

Played both courses - Premier is much nicer than the championship one. Managed to get a cheap deal and would not be impressed with championship greens for full price £50! Championship Clubhouse staff were a bit rude and snopbbish compared to the Lady Pro at the Premier, she was very helpful and friendly. Club shop a bit run down and manky. Some really good par 3s on the Prem

Really nice course, the golf pro was very friendly and informative. Managed to get a deal for £15, not worth full price £50. Some really nice holes, especially the par 3s. Try and avoid days when comps on as play can get very slow. Will definately play again.

Played the Championship course, some 7058 yards with all teh tee boxes at the back and some real tough pin positions. For a roasting summer day the greens were long and slow yet mangaged to repell nearly every high shot into them. I wasnt the only one complaining about the greens, firm putts were finishing 8-10ft short. The course really toughens up towards the end but a good challenge. Im just bitter I missed the cut by 2 shots.

Very disappointing for a premier course, Temporary greens in use were terrible (12ft circle of close mown area surrounded by semi rough) This made the game a lottery around the greens. No warning of these conditions were offered during booking. However the course layout is a great challenge for all levels of golf, if we can get a £20 deal in the summer we will give the course and club a second chance.

This club is near Oulton Park and has 2 courses, they also accept 2fore1 all year round bringing the cost to around £40pp but that does include a buggy.........great value.
Parkland course that is well maintained and playable all year, consistant with a club of this stature is the test, very good for all abilities.
Fantastic hazards and scenery, fairways are very good and bunkering perfectly placed.
Greens are quick and true with plenty of borrows, some holes play uphill and likewise downhill.
Good club selection paramount.
