Nice course, unwelcoming staff

I have recently moved to Somerset and played a few rounds on most of the local courses to find one I like to join as a member.

This course is very nice. All the aspects are well maintained. Greens are a little quick but suit my putting so quite happy. Quite a lot of ditches and water and I expect in winter this course will be very different. Clubhouse looks nice too.

But.... I called to book and asked when they close the gate to time my round and was greeted by a very grumpy person.

I ended up booking online and on arrival to the proshop I met the most non interested person ever in a golf course. Didn't say a single word. I was a visitor trying out with the potential of joining and most courses in Somerset have been super friendly.

Not sure if my mood wasn't right but most of the players seemed a bit unfriendly too

Very nice course, 2nd time playing Long sutton, great fairways, immaculate greens( very quick greens)
Would recomend this course its good for all abilities. It has a very nice club house and bar with good food. They have a nice club shop, not the biggest but has all you need. Definitely the best course around here.

Nice course, good layout. Greens little rough in places, some were fast and others slow, plenty of trees! Fairways were mostly decent, nice clubhouse

I don't normally review courses because I believe some courses suit some and some suit others, so it is a very personal experience that shouldn't be affected by other people's dislike of the type of course. But I felt I should comment on our experience at Long Sutton yesterday. The course is a pleasant one, but the greens were not in the best of conditions. But to be honest that's where the review of the course ends, because our day was already spoilt by the initial welcome, or more correctly, lack of welcome in the pro shop. In 20 odd years playing at hundreds of different courses accross the country, this was singularly the most unhappy, unenthusiastic and unhelpful welcome I have experienced. I know it's difficult times and courses are doing their best to stay safe so they can be open to all, but the manner in which paying visitors were greeted was simply unacceptable. Had the four of us not travelled a long way from different directions, we would have simply walked away and not played. Recent (during Covid) experiences of playing Yeovil, Sherborne, Bridport, Sidmouth and Honiton were so much more enjoyable.

I am sure Long Sutton could be a great course in years to come and I understand a lot of investment has been made by fairly new owners, but this needs to be backed up by ensuring that paying visitors leave with a truly positive experience to talk about and desire to return, which is a shame because that will not be the case for us.

Very unimpressed

Although the course seems to be improving and has had a bit of investment, the club has some unpleasant sides to it.
Having booked an evening round (5.50pm) we were strolling down the last when we were frogmarched of the course at 8.40pm, whilst receiving threats if we didn't leave right away. At every point we complied, although did mention that we weren't aware of the closing time. Apparently the course gates closed at 8pm (unknown to us, not mentioned in pro shop or when booking or on the website). This was very strange as there was still plenty of light for a couple of hours after 8pm and why would they book us in, giving us just over 2 hours to complete a round?!? There were two four balls in front of us the whole way round, so there was no way of knowing we were doing anything wrong or getting round that quickly!
The whole episode was pretty unnecessary and unpleasant. And to top it off they have not bothered replying to my e-mail asking what that was all about.
Don't think I'll be going back.

Disappointing condition

It is very difficult to find the fairway as it is same length as first cut. I have played this course several times, this is the worst I have ever seen it. You don't expect to use a rescue club from the 'fairway' the greens were reasonable given the rain we have had. The ladies toilet is a disgrace literally falling to bits. Will not be returning. Members say it is because the course is up for sale that the owners are not bothering.

Fairways indistinguishable from semi rough, bare patches and lumpy. Grass on tee boxes generally long so your tallest tee required to address ball. Greens good. The male members fourball ahead of us two ladies, that we followed from hole 10, held us up on every hole and refused to let us through. The pair behind us gave up on hole 14 and went in! One of the fourball came into the pro shop when I went to register my dismay at the lack of etiquette shown to us lady visitors, and argued about my concept of ready golf saying that fourballs have priority!

So Glad I Found This Course

Despite visiting the area on a number of occasions over many years my golf buddy and I have only just discovered this course. So glad we did.
Despite very challenging conditions (extremely windy) we both really enjoyed the course and the facilities and are really looking forward to going back.
Staff are very friendly and accomodating.
I you're in the area I'd heartily recommend a visit.
Due to the weather, particularly the hot summer, there are some issues with cracks in the fairways but don't let this put you off.

Unfortunately this course h?s suffered badly from our long hot spell. The fairways are cracking, so much so that a ball was found in a crack below ground level. Also the balls bounce wildly off to the side in many cases.
