Lexden Wood Golf Club
Bakers Lane, Colchester, Essex, CO3 4AU United Kingdom
18 hole course
The main course was redesigned and redeveloped in the winter of 2006/ spring 07, at a cost of £1m by Jonathon Gaunt, course architect.
He has added another 1000yds in distance to the previous layout, adding new greens and tees as well as reconstructing and adding nearly 80 new bunkers. Today the course is almost unrecognisable to the original layout. With substantial investment on course maintenance and new Head Green keeper Antony Kirwan, Lexden Wood is fast becoming Colchester’s premier golf centre.

Great course in great condition. Interesting and testing holes. Basic bar and resteraunt but okay. American Golf shop. Fair amount of road noise from adjacent A12. Fair amount of walking between holes. 18th green fair walk from clubhouse. Good driving range.

Quite a tight course and the fairways\ greens were in good condition for the time of year - and no doubt will get better into the summer.
Clubhouse tries hard and is friendly - although a little bit like a transpoert cafe. American Golf shop onsite is good.
Some long walks between a few tees - and a few hills so awkward lies.
Very friendly, the course beat me but is ultimately fair (just my bad golf on the day) and foa pay and play is a very good standard.

A new course. the golf course was interesting,
it didnt have millions of trees but it had a great course design,
the clubhouse maybe could do with improving, the shop was fabulous!
customer care second to none, i do like modern courses as play in spain alot so i did enjoy this course as the bunkers were in the right places to challenge the modern golfer!
would i recommend to play Lexden Wood? Yes because it ticks almost all the golfers boxes the greens are fantastic! It was great value for money.

Wow!
What a great golf Course!
Lexden Wood has come on leaps and bounds. I played Lexden Wood 3 years ago as a 8 handicap thinking this place needs improving, I am a now four handicap so i have alot of experience of various golf courses, i heard there had been alot of money invested and heard alot of good reports!
But blimey i was not expecting that! one of the best courses i have played this year and 100% the most improved a true quality Club. the course was evidently relatively new but it was in good condition the greens were as good as anywhere to get that quality of green elsewhere you would have to pay atleast £50!
Honestly golfers treat yourself a great day out
Get to lexden Wood!

Lexden Wood is a much improved course from a year ago, the greens are receptive, even in this hot dry weather we've had recently. The course has seen the benefit of last years heavy top dressing and spiking of some fairways and all the greens. The greenkeepers are performing miracles, really improving the place.

Despite the good feel and look on their website really thought that this course was a huge disappointment! Layout is awful and very confusing and whoever designed it needs to have a serious think about their career choice! I have never seen so many bunkers on a course - thought I was on Clacton Beach! Tees are often far too close to greens and almost cross them at places, while the walk between green and tee can be long. First six pretty standard up and downs but a little tight and greens not too receptive. Holes 7 through 9 okay and water definitelycomes in to play. Greens better and acuracy from the tee is key. Holes 10 through 12 are truly awful and I longed for a claxon to sound so I could call a halt to my round - event though it was a sunny 20 degrees if not a little breezy. These holes are young and will improve with time but they are really terrible holes. 13 through 18 are okay but not very long. Greens are quite a bit better than the previous 12 holes but it is spoilt by the unbelievably long walk back to a bleak breeze block club house which is like something out of a the early 80's! Think they really need to review the layout, lose a number of the bunkers and work on the greens but there is an American Golf store which is a bonus!

Course is still very wet. There are too many T boxes being used instead of the real tees. 10 - 13 are very wet and the ground is very stoney and clay like. Most of the bunkers on these holes are GUR due to water retention. The 8th hole, is now having the lake overflow drained, which is still covering alot of the fairway. They charge too much for the standard of the course.

After the extensive redesign of the course you now have a more challenging test. Greens still need a lot of improvment with at least 6 greens being in a very poor state.

I can't make up my mind about this course. I understood it to be a 'Family' orientated centre and would hope the course reflected this, being a little forgiving and a good beginners course and experience. Since their recent changes to the course, this is a much harder 18 than it needs to be. Too many bunkers that don't drain correctly and some a devoid of sand. Two holes where the fairways are riddled with stones and a few holes where walkways cross tees.

Greens not great, fairways just ok on some holes. But like layout and a decent challange.

course entended in length. over 70 bunkers now added. Rather stoney on 9 holes requiring teeing up.
once the earth has settled will be an excellent course.

new layout is very stoney and does affect your clubs. Needs a couple of years to settle down.
Facilities are poor when compared with other clubs around the area, but the free range balls as part of your membership are great
