Beautifully kept, this course winds through the outskirts of Hemsted Forest in a series of tight, tree-lined fairways. Staying straight is the key, as anything off the fairway only has a few yards of first cut before being swallowed by the tall pines; fortunately the pine-needled floor underneath rarely results in a ball being lost, so normally only costing the one shot needed to chip out sideways. It is certainly a difficult course; even though it only plays 6000-odd yards off the yellows, I've never got within four shots of my handicap even on a good day. The greens are fast and true; in the winter they become quite receptive, but in summer you need to switch to 'links' mode, landing the ball short and letting it roll on to avoid going through. They offer a good mix, with some being relatively flat, and others two-tiered and/or heavily sloped, which coupled with the speed in summer can make downhill putts very difficult indeed.
The club facilities are okay; the bar is independently owned by a family who run the local Turkish restaurant, with a reasonable selection of snacks, beers and lagers. I've never eaten there other than breakfast, which was okay but not great, although reasonably priced. Summer is lovely with the sun-drenched patio overlooking the 18th green. Green fees are good for a semi-private course at around £40, whilst taking any of the point-based membership options offers excellent value-for-money (at time of writing, buying the least amount of points available and playing only on weekend mornings still works out at only £20/round - this decreases significantly if buying more points of playing weekdays/twilight).
Overall a picturesque course that will present a challenge to players of all abilities, and undoubtedly the best - as well as the most difficult - course in the area. If you're not a straight hitter though, beware!

Play it in the spring/summer. Not a long track, but must be on the fairway.

Interesting and challenging course. Only played there once and it rained hard the whole time, so looking forward to going back to try it out again.
