Gog Magog Golf Club Reviews & Information

What the club says: The Gog Magog Golf Club, established in 1901, has been the favourite Cambridge golf club for top class amateur events having the special appeal of two top quality championship golf courses.

Set in the rolling East Anglia countryside among the legendary Gog Magog hills, these Cambridge golf courses afford superb all year round golf facilities with stunning views over Cambridge and across the fens of East Anglia to the majestic Ely Cathedral.

The Old Course -Home of the Lagonda Trophy
At 6398 Yards off the whites, the Old Course is more a test of accuracy than strength and be prepared for a challenging start as you steadily climb from the Clubhouse and take in the beautiful vista from the Gog Magog Hills.

Wandlebury Course - Open Regional Qualifying Course 2007 - 2011
Longer at 6735 yards, but perhaps less intimidating than the Old Course, at least while the trees are maturing, the Wandlebury presents more opportunities for using your fairway woods, although use of your sand wedge is unlikely to correspondingly diminish.

The weather was against us really, it was windy and on quite a long course, that made it difficult on a cold April day. I\'m pretty sure I would like this course a lot on a warm Summer day.

The greens were running well, and the sand in the bunkers was about perfect if a little shallower than needed on some of the deeper ones.

We took a party of 8 Juniors with 4 adults, and the Club looked after us very well, both in terms of booking, setting aside tee times and the food they provided for us.

Very impressed - will have to go back and play the other course.

For a mid-handicapper (14), the Old Course offers an intriguing but eminently playable challenge. With the wind pretty much down on an early-spring day, the course offered up a lot of straightforward par opportunities once through the opening three holes (which played \'into\' what breeze there was and uphill). The 6th is a cracking par-3, as is the 13th. There are very few holes where you need to be worried about threading one off the tee - although if you can shrewdly position yourself off the tee it really helps on holes such as the par-4 3rd and the par-5 14th. The 437-yard uphill 16th is a long par-4 that will see only the bigger hitters hitting the green in two. There are one or two slightly eccentric greens, that on the par-4 11th being a case in point. But they very much add to what is a really satisfying test.

A good course favourable to big hitters, the course is fairly forgiving if your not as accurate as you should be, like me

Played Old Course. Pro Shop very helpful & friendly. Course free-draining - a plus this summer - and fairways wonderfully springy. Many holes on front 9 samey - drive to or around the 150 mark then a mid iron. Back 9 more interesting altho quite a few on both 9s are straight up and down. Pretty wide open off the tee, the wind and carefully placed bunkers being the main defences. Fairways in good nick but rough and walks from tees to fairways a little raggedy. Members on course friendly enough but not a particulalry warm welcome in the clubhouse altho decent beer and OK burger. A bit overpriced - better value on good courses close by at Haverhill or down the road at Bishops' Stortford. May go back but not in a hurry.

This course is very well maintained with some nice views over Cambridge countryside and a surprising roll to it for fenland. Greens are true. First 2 holes uphill are deceptively long, especially into the wind. Bunkers leave a bit to be desired - sand seems unneccesarily hard. Course facilities are excellent, staff friendly - all in all a very good experience.
