Your paying for the name

Clearly a very well manicured course which is very expensive to play . You are paying for the prestige of playing here as the greens are nowhere near as good as a lot of cheaper courses I have played on this year. Parklands and Linden Halls greens are much superior to these.

Considering that half the Fillies course was shortened and as we only played 16 holes on the Colt to say this was a disappointment is an understatement.. no compensation was offered and we also had to pay the full price for buggies.. And drinks in the 19 hole are an extortionate price.

Played the Filly Course, a good golf course, but I expected a bit more from Close House.
It's in good condition, except for the greens which are heavily sanded & therefore slow.
It's a nice lay out, with some good strategic bunkering & a few trees.
I particularly enjoyed holes 5 to 8 where there was a bit of water & you go up & down hill, but other than that the course was fairly flat.
A nice golf course, but I expected more

Major improvement on the course over the last few years. Fantastic new clubhouse and driving range. Greens are very good; undulating with varying levels. Quite expensive, but a nice course.

The course has underone a major programme of improvements and after almost a fulll summer of the new layout being ipen, the course is bearing up well.
It will only get better with time, as the greeens bed in. They are all brand new and have benn built to exacting PGA standards.

The downside is the cr@p approach road and parking facilities.

The clubhouse, athlough small, is welcoming and the John Smiths is a treat. Plansa re in place for a new clubhouse, but the timescale is not cast in concrete.

Not a Winter Course

Played this as Day 2 of an overnight break. March was the wettest March for 40 years and the course had not held up particularly well. It was very soft in places, although playable. Greens really needed a cut as they were very inconsistent. 2 temporary tees in play which were not fit for purpose. They made two decent par 4s into pitch and putt holes and the matts had just been borrowed from the range and still had the rubber driving tee in!!!
Accommodation was fabulous and very, very spacious even if they do push the two single beds right next to each to fit into the wall mounted headboard??? Food was decent but nowhere near as good as Sandburn Hall the previous day.

Great course

Great condition and greens fantastic. Quite an incline on a number of holes so not for the faint hearted.

Great golf, amazing accommodation

The package here is hard to beat, we have now been for the last two years and always love the accommodation and food/beverages. The golf courses are both lovely, funnily enough we preferred the Filly to the Colt, not even sure why. Professionalism in the range and clubhouse is superb and if they added a spa I would be back more often. Certainly worth a go.

Slightly Overrated but great nontheless

The second half of a deal we had to cancel due to bad weather in March, so as true quality hosts would, Close House rescheduled this particular round for us till the middle of season in June - Brilliant.

However, it corresponded with the England V Panama World Cup tie which (moving the tee time any golfers in our group who wanted to could watch the game) meant that after a lllooonnnggg round timewise (the course seemed very full and groups were being released off of the first tee every six minutes which meant backlogs on many of the tees) and a two hour drive back it was incredibly late by the time I got home.

As for the course and facilities - facilities are absolutely superb, from the driving range, through to the car parks, the rooms to stop over in and the bar/veranda, clubshop area - all top notch.

The course - was very nice too, as you'd expect from a venue such as this, fairways were true, as were the greens - so much so it was very easy to give the greens a little too much respect, think about the putt for far too long then play the putt too tentatively. Three putts plus were common. There was sand in the bunkers which players could play out of too. All in all it was very good as we expected but as an individual not quite as excellent as I thought it should've been. I just felt that maybe Close House was slightly over-hyped and overrated due to the British Masters being held there last year.

With this in mind I would say that there are courses we (as in our society that do these trips) have played that we have gotten on similar deals that I would return to before Close House given a straight choice between the two (Rockcliffe and Ramside are two examples).

All that said - over the two day deal we all had a great time on a great course with superb facilities and are taking greater numbers back with us for a similar deal next March.
