Bury St Edmunds Golf Club
Tut Hill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, IP28 6LG United Kingdom
Our 18-hole course, founded in 1924 with an original design by the first British Ryder Cup captain Ted Ray, is established parkland in character, set in 150 gently rolling acres of easy walking, with most holes flanked by magnificent mature woodland. We also offer a nine-hole pay-and-play course, with both renowned for outstanding year-round condition.
The 18-hole course at Bury St Edmunds is regarded as one of the finest of its type - mature, rolling parkland - in Suffolk, with a stunning setting that includes magnificent native woodland and glimpses of a variety of wildlife. No water, but our trees and 69 strategically-placed bunkers help to concentrate the mind and if the wind blows the holes' frequent changes of direction add to the challenge. The par 72 course plays 6,676 yards off the white tees, making it one of the longest in the county, but the walking is easy enough. The nine-hole pay-and-play course (for which no handicap certificate is required), less mature than the main course but no less attractive, is a perfect starting point for beginners but is no 'gimme' for the more experience player, 20 particularly in windy conditions. It is used by the club to help develop its thriving junior section.Book a Tee Time

This club is too stuffy and stuck in the past, sadly missing the chance to encourage new members, expensive to join but course condition is very high standard but a bit clinical and predictable. Club is dominated by retired golfers who seem to spend their time looking for a reason to complain, new members do not feel welcome. If you are retired and can afford it then may suit you, if you are a weekend golfer save your money and look elsewhere as there are better clubs with a warm welcome

Was a member here for nearly a year and felt very unwelcome. With the joining fee and membership fees this is a very expensive club and for a weekend golfer far too pricey. The average age here seems to be retired 65+ and the club fixtures reflects this so getting a casual game at the weekend is tough and sometimes impossible. Facilities and course are excellent but as a balanced feel to enjoyment, warm welcome, and embracing new golfers i would say they are lacking big time.
The club has some very excellent course marshalls, good pro shop, good good teaching facilities. The course is kept to a very high standard but is slightly dull and not very rewarding, if you are looking for variation this place hasnt much to offer, it does have loads of bunkers will poor quality sand, too little sand and slow play most of the time
Hope this helps anybody considering parting with large sums of money.

Park land course with plenty of trees. Course in great condition, greens were a little slow though and probably needed a cut. A challenging but fair test of golf for both high and low handicaps.

Decent course albeit we played on a blustery November morning after a heavy leaf fall!
An extremely poor reflection on members though - vice captain thought it appropriate to march accross a tee waving his arms telling us to hurry up. This followed by the Captain walking up to us in the bar having a go at the member who had signed us in!
The club seem very keen on fast play but less keen on you actually enjoying your round. If I was just starting the game or a prospective new member I would now stay well clear. This hardly encourages people to take the game up. There are plenty of other courses to play for similar money so I would look for those before trying BSE.

Course was very average with plenty of leaves on the course due to the time of year. The scorecard states in bold capital letters speed time at which golf should be played at, 2 balls 3 hrs, 3 balls 3hrs 30mins and 4 balls 3hrs 45mins. Our fourball was ruined by two members of the club, the Vice Captain and the Catpain. The vice captain approached us on the 4th tee stating that we were holding up groups behind when the group behind us were only playing there 2nd shots into the green and we had already played our tee shots on the 5th. I think the vice captain was trying to tell us we should be able to keep up with a 2 ball in front of us!! very unusual quote as i have never been approached about my speed of play at any other golf course! When were then approached in the club house and given a volley of abuse from the club captain about our speed of play( although the captain didn\'t want ot make a seen in front of everyone) we explained that we had never been to such an unweloming and negative club thart played speed golf in the 15 years of playing. If we were playing on the basis that we would like to join the club ( about £2000 in membership were lost straight away and now I would never even want to set foot on the course and spend another penny of my money there!! The worst place i have ever played. Felt very uncomfortable and i would steer well clear of the club!

Very unwelcoming place. We played as a four ball and on the fifth tee were warned by the vice captain to hurry up even though we were well ahead of the group behind us. To round a thoroughly misrable day off we were confronted by the captain in the bar afterwards who even though had not been playing decided he would have a pop at us as well. Needless to say we will not be going back and by the sound of other reviews on this site were not the only ones !!! Oh by the way we finished our round in a shade under 4 hours.

Good, challenging course for a high handicapper - the trees close to nearly all the fairways makes up for the lack of water. Generally friendly membership, although the number of people on the course on a warm Saturday lunchtime led to few frayed tempers - not least from a member who rather agressively berated us for "holding up the whole course" despite the fact that we were right behind the four-ball in front of us and hadn't see the four behind us for the last three holes. Disappointing, particularly as the member in question was about five holes behind us and really had no idea how quickly or slowly we were playing - I guess he was just venting his frustration. Otherwise the round was spot on and I would definitely play the course again.
