Burnley Golf Club

Burnley Golf ClubThe club was orginally mapped out in 1905 by George Lowe the professional at Lytham St. Annes. Iin 1908 the course was redesigned by Alec (Sandy) Herd, former British Open Champion at Hoylake in 1902. The course was altered and increased to 18 holes between its inception in 1905 and 1929, as well as many other alterations. It was however in December 1929 that the course was visited by James Braid, 5 times British Open winner and renowned golf course designer. James Braid suggested at the time, three new holes, over thirty bunkers, several new tee beds and mounds. The local paper called it extravangant! The layout of the course still remains the same after all this time, which is a testament to James Braid. As well as being a pleasant place to enjoy a round of golf, there are also superb views across the town and surrounding villages, below Pendle Hill. On a clear day you can see the "Three Peaks" - Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent.

Golf course review of Burnley Golf Club

The course is designed by James Braid, same designer for gleneagles. Having played Gleneagles this year I wondered how this would fair and I have to say that it comes in my top 5 courses I've ever played, probably number 3 after the Kings and Queens courses.

I think this course is under exposed considering how good and testing a track it is, but that may be because the management of it wasn't massively impressive.

For starters it's not at all signposted off the main roads nearby and the driveway leading the clubhouse could be mistaken for a large footpath or bridleway. On the course itself they do have some nice tee number boards with hole layouts, however, there often aren't clear signposts to the next tee. With many blind shots you have to rely on the marker posts in the fairway, however, I found a number of these to be off the line of the shot with a couple needing to be shot quite left of to be safe, especially if you have a natural fade. Despite that the scenery and the layout of the course is quite astounding and if I lived up in Burnley it would be the course for me.

The clubhouse is in much need of some paint and pride and i recoken that this course could command some great attraction if marketed right. For instance the cheapest pitch forks going with justa paper logo sticker on isn't the best memento in the world!

Anyway, i'll be back to try it out when i'm next up north again!

Excellent course, though challenging when the wind blows, all greens and fairways are in great condition and the clubhouse and facilities are A1. Also the pro shop lads are extremely friendly and helpful.

Golf course review of Burnley Golf Club

Burnley Golf club affords spectacular views across burnley and the ribble valley. The wind is a constant factor and on days this can be the course's best defence.

The course whilst not easy is fair and generally the condition of the course is good. I would recommend this course to anyone who would like to play a challenging golf course
