Marriott St Pierre Hotel & Country Club
The fabulous setting at St Pierre has been one of the key factors behind the rise in status of Welsh golf.
The Old Course
The famous Old Course is recognised as one of the finest in the UK and has played host to the Solheim Cup and EuroPro Tour events as well as other tournaments. Your round reaches a wonderful finale with the 17th green almost on an island and the famous 18th hole with its elevated green, which has seen the climax to many an exciting professional tournament.
18 holes. Par 71. 6733 yards. Parkland / Woodland.
Mathern (Marriott St Pierre)
The Mathern Course is a wonderful complement to the tougher Old Course. Opened in 1975 and designed by Bill Cox, this course gives you an opportunity to enjoy the peaceful Monmouthshire surroundings at a great golfing venue.
18 holes. Par 68. 5748 yards. Parkland / Woodland.

Played the Mathern Course which whilst short is very tight and needs good course management to score well. You only need to get your driver out on a handful of holes as a decent long iron will give you a shot in on all the par 4s. Greens very flat but in very good nick.

Good test tight in places with a lot of trees. Big hitters be warned. You have to think your way around.

Fantastic course, slightly confusing layout first time. Excellent facilities, though hedgehog wheels required on trolleys. Cheap to hire at £3 each from the pro shop. A course everyone should play

Top class course. If your trolley does not have hedgehog wheels for winter play, you are obliged to hire from their clubhouse.

The mathern course is very challenging, you can lose a lot of balls on this course if you go off the fairway. in rainy times this course can get quite wet underfoot as it used to be a floodplane and still has some of those characteristics. saying that it is a good fun course to play on. The old course is better as it is slightly more roomy. does not hold the water as much as the mathern. it is more expensive though i think. not sure of cost as i usually play as a guest.

Played The Old on Sat 21st March, the course was in lovely condition, although they had verti-drained less than 5 days previously. Greens although a little sandy, were quite quick and on the whole true.
As expected, received a very nice welcome. 3 small critisisms, 1.No Course Planners, they are being reprinted, due to some changes on the course. 2.Wasn't told about the course changes. 3.The food and drink isn't cheap.. Sandwiches £5-£6 each, bloody hell. The Course

Re: Old Course - Scenic parkland course with many fairways lined with towering mature trees. Not as challenging as I would have expected but still plenty of good golfing holes with the 17th and 18th being a great finale. 10th is a dog leg left which is not obvious. 17th green is almost in the lake and is blind if you miss the fairway left. Can hit over the trees but make sure you have checked line and distance carefully. Two semi permanent greens in use while permanent greens are being reconstructed. loses out on appeal because of this especially as there is no reduction in the green fee. Still an enjoyable couse to play.

Played the Old Course one day and the Mathern the next on an October Golfbreak.
We were the first group out on the Old Course after the Celtic Pro tour players went off so the course was in pretty sparkling condition but the weather, unfortunately, wasn't so good. Not as stiff a test as I expected, but well laid out and not just a test of power - although the occasional big drive is useful. Two temporary greens are still in use with the new greens nearly ready behind them, but they were up to the same standard as the permanent ones. Well drained so the occasional downpour effected putting, but generally the greens were big and true. Liked the 10th, a tricky 2nd shot into a water flanked green. 18th was a monster - 236yd par 3 - just out of my range but fun.
Mathern is flatter and tighter but suffered much more from standing water, especially after the torrential downpour and hail at the turn. Greens are smaller and not as good as the Old Course, a bit of a lottery when putting. Fairways are less well defined but still in pretty good condition considering.
Hotel is comfortable enough, but typical Marriot bar prices - although the food was much better than in previous visits to this chains eaterys. The Course

I played this course for the umpteenth time this last week and I must say that the general condition, couple with some subtle changes to the layout and greens are making this, once again, a truly GREAT golfing experience.
Beyond doubt, play it!The Course

I stayed and played here as part of a 2 day golf break, dinner bed & breakfest +2 rounds of golf £99.0. Excellent value for money The Mathern has undergone a recent makeover,so we were on temp tees ? All were Astro Turf and in excellent condition. The greens where like putting on axmister carpet!! Onthe second day Iplayed the old course which although still in the process of its major re fit was still great. I read that this was all part of a £7million investment programe for the whole estate which should be complete by April 2008. I cant wait to go back and play the finished project

The old course... is a lovely course, has a bit of everything, water, tough par 3's, decent length par 5's, nice greens etc... and, probably one of the hardest par 3 finishing holes i've ever played!

Good condition generally .However, the tees are a little undulating and there are some very poor areas that need marking as GUR. Course is playing well for this time of year.
