A guide to golf at Hotel La Finca Golf Resort and Spa Resort

By: Golf Shake | Thu 03 Sep 2015

Hotel La Finca Golf and Spa Resort is a stunning five-star hotel that is situated within the spectacular surroundings of Costa Blanca in the south-east of Spain. Easily accessible from both Alicante and San Javier Airports, the on-site golf course was built in 2002, with each room in the hotel enjoying panoramic vistas of the holes, in addition to the luscious gardens and large outdoor swimming pools.

The impressive Escotera Mountains can also be seen in the distance, enhancing the resort with a sense of awe. This all compliments the excellent facilities on offer, with three courses in the area satisfying the needs of all golfers who have the good fortune to stay at this Alicante gem.

Region, Golf and Accommodation

The La Finca Golf Course is exceedingly challenging, having been laid out to test the very best players in tournament conditions. With undulating greens, deep bunkers and plentiful water hazards featuring ominously throughout many of the holes, each facet of a player’s game will be examined during a round on what is an undoubtedly beautiful course.

There are some excellent holes, particularly on the front-nine, with one tee shot being played towards an island green, with the water threatening on all sides. Intimidating, but spectacular, that one shot typifies what makes the La Finca course such a memorable layout to play.

Just a short distance away, Villamartin Golf Club is a superb layout that once hosted the Mediterranean Open, which was won by two-time Masters Champion Jose Maria Olazabal in 1994. The Ryder Cup legend clearly found the course to his liking two decades ago, and there is a fair chance that you will also enjoy its varied and interesting challenge.

The topography of the holes is undulating, with the front-nine progressing along the top of hills – providing tremendous views – while the back-nine plays at a lower altitude within valleys, with a number of ravines turning into treacherous hazards as you come towards the end of your round.

Las Ramblas is the third course to be enjoyed on this Spanish adventure. It was opened for play back in 1991, the layout has been carved and woven immaculately through a rolling landscape of ravines and stunningly indigenous trees, bringing with it a tranquillity and a picturesque frame for the holes.

Arguably the least challenging of the three courses, Las Ramblas nonetheless is a stimulating challenge for visiting golfers, with a rugged landscape and large greens providing an intriguing and enjoyable round. The club itself has a very small membership, retaining a close link to the UK.

Perhaps most interestingly for cinematic devotees, however, is the fact that Las Ramblas was used as a set for Taken 3. Important scenes were filmed at the club, which included the film’s star Liam Neeson. Although the movie was unquestionably terrible, the course looked great in it.

All three of the courses can boast professional-standard practice facilities and welcoming clubhouse, where food and refreshments will be available to a party of golfers as they digest their round. This is particularly at Villamartin, with its Jardines Restaurant being highly regarded, with an excellent venue and stunning views across the course and countryside.

It’s also worth noting that free transport is available for groups of up to seven people from the resort to both Villamartin and Las Ramblas, while La Finca is naturally within walking distance of your room.

Within the hotel there are state of the art spa facilities, with aroma scented and heated swimming pools designed to heighten a sense of peace and relaxation – certainly something appreciated by most people during a holiday. There is always an excellent gymnasium within the building, while numerous programmes and treatments are on offer to fulfil the needs of each individual guest.

The Bottom Line

Spending time at La Finca is an opportunity to sample luxury surroundings in the spectacular Mediterranean climate of south-east Spain. With immaculately presented and challenging courses in the area, there are ample playing options to satisfy the most avid of golfers. Perfect for couples or a group of friends, you have to consider the La Finca Golf and Spa Resort as potentially being your next golf break.
