The North West of England is full of exquisite golf courses from Championship Open venues to hidden gems well worth discovering. To help you get started here are our Ten of the Best under £100. 

Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa

Formby Hall GC

The Championship Old Course at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa measures in over 7,000 yards. The fairways are tightly mown and the greens are in top condition all year round. To add to the Championship 18 hole course, there is also a 9 hole par 3 course which is regarded as one of the best in England.

Silloth on Solway

At the most northwesterly tip of the Cumbria coast you will find an absolute gem of a golf course. Silloth on Solway is your typical links golf course. It offers plenty of blind shots, undulating fairways and pot bunkers.

Any ball slightly off-line can be harshly punished which is typical of a links course. You have to take the good with the bad at Silloth, you may hit a tee shot that pitches in the fairway but takes a bad bounce into the long rough but then on the next hole you can hit a poor shot which gets a nice bounce off a hump in the fairway.

The fact the English Amateur Open Championship was held there in 2012 shows just how good a golf course Silloth on Solway is.

Delamere Forest Golf Club

This heathland course in the county of Cheshire is regarded as one of the best heathland courses in England and is definitely worth a round if you are in the county. Situated in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, Delamere Forest is a true hidden gem.

The rolling fairways surrounded by heather and gorse make the course easy on the eye but don’t mistake that for an easy round of golf. The course can also be played as a par 71 or 72 as depending on where the pin is on the 15th, it can be played as a 189 yard par 3 (off the back tees) or a 308 yard par 4.

Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club

Despite only opening in 1998, Vale Royal Abbey Golf Club has quickly matured to become one of the best in the North West. Your experience at Vale Royal Abbey can only be described as unique and breathtaking.

The course is set amidst the beautiful Cheshire countryside and offers a fair test of golf to all standards of golfer. Its excellent drainage system also means that the course is available to play all year round. The clubhouse is something to behold, as it is set within the majestic 16th Century Vale Royal Abbey.

De Vere Wychwood Park Golf Club

Wychwood park GC

Wychwood Park was built to meet European and PGA Tour standards and was only opened in 2002. Despite being a young course, Wychwood Park has definitely matured into a wonderful golf course.

This par 72 golf course is set in the rolling Cheshire countryside and is part of the De Vere hotel change meaning you can stay and play at this terrific golfer course.

Ormskirk Golf Club

Situated close to the historic market town of Ormskirk, this golf course is a regular on the county circuit. The course is just a few miles down the road from the infamous Southport golf coast.

The course is tree-lined with many strategically placed bunkers to add to the challenge. The greens at Ormskirk tend to be in top condition most of the year and are a tough test for every golfer.

The course is just a 40-minute drive away from Liverpool city centre so if you’re looking for somewhere to stay it shouldn’t be a problem. You can even enjoy a night out in the exciting Liverpool nightlife.

Manchester Golf Club

Manchester Golf Club

Manchester Golf Club is set in 240 acres of parkland and heathland and has hosted events such as Lancashire Amateur Championship and the Northern Counties Championship in the past.

This par 72 golf course is a private members club however welcomes visitors warmly. The club also boasts that when playing this course you will be surrounded by nothing but rural, scenic views despite only being a 40-minute drive from Manchester city centre.

Caldy Golf Club

Caldy Golf Club that playing at their course is one of the most rewarding golfing experiences you can enjoy on the beautiful Wirral Peninsula. Caldy is one of the finest golf courses on the Wirral which is mainly due to the constant improvements taken on the course and in the clubhouse.

This superb 6,714 yard course is situated on the River Dee and offers breathtaking cliff top views over the estuary to the Hilbre Islands and the coast of Wales. Mottram Hall Hotel Golf Club

Now part of the Q Hotel chain, Mottram Hall offers an outstanding championship standard golf course set in 270 acres of Cheshire’s finest parkland. The 7,006 yard course hosted the European PGA Seniors in 2013, a feat they are very proud of.

Clitheroe Golf Club

Clitheroe has been a regional qualifying course for The Open Championship for a few years now. The course is situated in the beautiful Ribble Valley and has recently been extended.

The course now measures at 6,531 yards from the back tees and has recently reconstructed all the greens to meet USGA specification. The par 3 5th hole is reputed as one of the best par 3s in the North West of England and is definitely one to tell your friends about.
