Donnafugata eye double success at 2015 World Golf Travel Awards

By: Golf Shake | Wed 22 Apr 2015

Sicily’s five-star Donnafugata Golf Resort & SPA will be chasing double success at the 2015 World Golf Awards after being shortlisted for two top awards at this year’s event, which will be staged in Portugal later this year.

The winners will be unveiled at a gala ceremony on Saturday, November 7, and the deluxe venue is in the running for two awards after it was nominated as ‘Italy’s Best Golf Hotel’ and its Links Course was shortlisted in the ‘Italy’s Best Golf Course’ category.

Donnafugata Resort’s wide array of five-star facilities include two 18-hole championship golf courses, a 202-room hotel and award-winning luxury spa, while the resort opened a new Darren Clarke Centre of Excellence in 2014 – the only one of its kind in continental Europe featuring the 2016 European Ryder Cup captain.

The Franco Piras-designed Links Course runs up and down two large valleys, each one with a lake, and has quickly become a firm favourite with Donnafugata’s visitors.

Nestled between two nature reserves with the Mediterranean as a backdrop, the par-72, 6,674-metre layout offers a pleasant contrast to the resort’s other championship course – the Parkland, designed by Gary Player and host of the 2011 Sicilian Open – with the setting making the course a haven for migrating birds and other wildlife.

Guy Roberts, director of golf at Donnafugata Golf Resort & SPA, said: “To be in the running for global recognition on two fronts is fantastic news.

“It’s a great honour for Donnafugata to be nominated alongside some of the most prestigious courses and golfing venues in Italy and is a further indication of the impact the resort has made in the luxury golf sector since opening.

“Not only do we have outstanding facilities including two wonderful golf courses and Europe’s only Darren Clarke Centre of Excellence, but we also have a wide array of attractions nearby for guests to enjoy and explore, making Donnafugata an increasingly popular place to holiday for new, emerging and established markets.”

Donnafugata Golf Resort & SPA has won widespread acclaim across the golf industry since opening in 2010 and it has claimed a series of accolades to help establish itself among the elite resorts in Europe, including being named in Rolex World’s latest Top 1,000 Golf Courses poll and being the first course in Italy to be invited to join IMG Prestige, an exclusive collection of some of the world’s most celebrated golfing venues.

Located just 15 minutes from Comiso airport and set in the beautiful area of Donnafugata, a natural reserve and famous tourist destination known for the imposing castle which bears the same name, the Resort boasts a number of fantastic historical cities to explore nearby. These include Val di Noto, the heart of Sicilian baroque; Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Siraicuse, Noto and Scicli. All are deemed fitting of UNESCO World Heritage status.

As well as its outstanding golf facilities, Donnafugata Golf Resort & SPA has 202 rooms, an award-winning 900mq spa and health club, two swimming pools, a private beache and three restaurants offering a broad selection of ‘0km food’ locally-sourced gastronomic delights, well accompanied by perfect Sicilian wines to enhance flavour.

Voting for the 2015 World Golf Awards is open until late autumn, with the winners set to be crowned at a lavish gala ceremony at the Conrad Algarve, Quinta do Lago, on Saturday, November 7.
