A review of Bearwood Lakes Golf Club

By: Luke Tricker | Wed 08 Oct 2008

According to Top100golfcourses.co.uk, Bearwood lakes is the 31st best golf course in the whole of England and with its own website describing it as “..an oasis of calm and beauty…with a backdrop of mature oak, lime and beech and surrounded by Scots pine..” I was expecting big things…I wasn’t disappointed.

The 30 golf courses above this must be something special because Bearwood Lakes was an absolute pleasure to play and there wasn’t a bland hole for the entire round.
The setting is fantastic, and it’s unbelievable to think that you’re anywhere even close to civilisation, such is the peaceful and tranquil nature of this course. The tree lined fairways and beautifully manicured greens almost make this course too pretty to play golf on. The Clubhouse is spectacular with a balcony looking out over the 1st tee and the 7th and 18th Greens and houses all the facilities you would expect of a top class golf club.

As for the course itself, right from the very first tee, the course swamps you with its well laid out charm and natural beauty. The first fairway splits right down the middle of the 7th and 18th fairways which come back the other way, all scattered with an array of bunkers, and lined with trees. One word of warning though,  whilst the fairways are delightful, do not miss them as the rough is harsh and will set you back a shot or two, which is exactly what you should expect if you don’t keep it on the short stuff!

The courses signature hole, the 14th is a tricky par 3 that requires a bold shot and great club selection in order to carry the water and land the ball on the green, but it’s hard to pick just one, when there are so many visually great holes.

A relatively new club, Bearwood Lakes is mature beyond its years, although it has only opened its doors to visitors a couple of years ago. It still retains the beauty and character that you only get from traditionally run member clubs.

If you ever get the opportunity to play this course then take it with both hands, it is a great test for all standards of golfer and I will certainly be going back.
