Mendip Golf Club are proud to have been invited to host the South West qualifying round for the Catalonian International Golf Festival to be played on four championship courses in the Barcelona area including the venue for last year’s Spanish Open. The Stableford competition is open to both male and female golfers with an active handicap, and will be played as a shotgun start at 2.30 pm on Wednesday, 15th August . The first prize winner will be invited to play in the 4 day Festival ,with all expenses , except flights, paid and compete against winners from other qualifiers being held in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain and a number of other European countries. Entry Fees are £25 for non- MGC members, and £10 for non-playing guests who wish to attend the fun presentation evening afterwards which will include an ongoing Spanish style buffet and a live band.
Rob Needham, Chairman comments “ The organisers were looking for a club relatively close to Bristol Airport to hold this competition, and we were chosen because of the combination of our excellent course, fantastic catering, and flexibility. We are very proud and have kept our entry fees low in order to make this great opportunity accessible to all golfers in the region. Let’s hope we also attract the Catalonian sunshine! ”
For an entry form, please contact Jim Scott, Secretary, on 01749 840570 ext 3.
Meanwhile, The Mendip Pro-am is fast approaching and is filling up fast. The event which takes place on Sunday 29th July is well worth participating in with lots of great prizes up for grabs. The seniors match against Enmore Park on Tuesday was a wet and blustery affair compared to the sunny day enjoyed when Mendip seniors played away. The Mendip winning by a comfortable margin 6 matches to 2. The seniors have now reached the halfway stage in their matches having won more than they have lost. We still have 21 matches to go so any seniors that want to play are encouraged to add their name to the fixtures on the Seniors notice board.
On a day when winds were approaching gale force the Seniors competed for The Olli Parfitt Cup. This being the only medal competition on their programme of events. The tough conditions pushed the standard scratch up by 2 shots, there were as a consequence a number of non returns and even more tales of being blown off course! Senior's Captain Colin Davies was 4 under his handicap after 9 holes then took 8 to get down on the par 4 10th; playing partner Jeff Hodder played some solid golf on the back 9 to record the joint lowest gross score of the day (84). Abe Fukyama playing steadily lost a ball up the 10th, and recorded a 7 down the 18th to finish with a 73; just outside the prizes.
1st Colin Davies Nett 71, 2nd Jeff Hodder Nett 72 (back 9) 3rd Roger Ashton Nett 72; 4th Brian Carter Nett 73 (back 9); 5th Danny Nixon Nett 73 (back 9).
