New Lady Captain at Cottrell Park 2011

By: Golf Shake | Tue 08 Feb 2011

On Thursday the 20th January, which was a bitterly cold clear day, the new Ladies’ Captain of Cottrell Park golf club, Jenny McGlyne performed her drive in front of a large crowd of supporters, with an excellent drive straight up the middle of the fairway. Brenda Margetts placed her flag nearest to where the ball landed and won a newly minted silver 2011 pound coin.
This was followed by a 12 hole Stableford competition on the Mackintosh course in icy conditions which made the golf very interesting, with difficulty keeping the ball on the greens. In spite of this there were some very good scores. The Vice captains’ team beat the Captains team and the individual winner of the Captains team was Chris Impey and the Vice captains team Sara Williams, both with 25 points.

62 ladies enjoyed a good lunch; Jenny McGlyne thanked Lorraine Pointon-Bell, Immediate past Captain for her hard work over the previous year and presented her with a thank you present from the ladies. She also gave her a special album with a record of her year as captain which she was delighted to receive.

She also welcomed Judy James as her Vice Captain before announcing her chosen charity for 2011 which is The Dogs Trust. She gave a short interesting talk on the history of the Drive In which started in 1754, when the Royal and Ancient Golf Club was formed. A silver club was played for annually and the winner became captain for a year. In 1806 the captaincy became an elected position but the R&A retained the fiction of a competition to select a captain. The captain was selected and then entered in to a competition in which he was the sole competitor and declared the winner after his first drive from the first tee!

She described some of the social events which will take place over the coming year. In conclusion she thanked the ladies for supporting her at her Drive In and lunch and wished them all good golfing in the coming year.
