La Cala Golf & Spa Resort

La Cala Golf & Spa ResortThe natural features of the La Cala terrain have been used to challenging effect by the renowned golf course architect, Cabell B. Robinson. The three courses are carefully maintained to ensure they are playable all year round. The North Course (now renamed Campo America) is perhaps more difficult than the shorter South (Campo Asia) but both demand great accuracy from the tee and careful club selection. Meanwhile, the third golf course, Campo Europa, uses the River Ojen in making the course distinctive. The layout allows for plenty of water hazards. All three offer different challenges to all levels of golfers and demand good course management in addition to a wide variety of shots.

Blue Skies for St. Patricks Day Competition at La Cala Resort

Posted by: Darren Ramowski on Thu 01 Apr 2010

The sixth annual St. Patrick’s Day competition at La Cala Resort in Mijas, Malaga was played under blue skies on the Irish national feast day, Wednesday, March 17th. There was a great festive atmosphere on the day with many of the competitors and buggies decked out in the national colours of green, white and gold. After the competition ended there was a meal in the clubhouse featuring traditional Irish cuisine.

The better ball stableford was played on Campo America. In spite of Malaga having suffered the wettest winter on record, the course was in very good condition with the fast greens being the subject of much favourable comment. In all, 70 players competed with the international nature of the event being highlighted by the first three pairings, who were English, Irish and Welsh respectively. The current La Cala captain, James Reid, teamed up with fellow Englishman Roger Dew to take the overall prize with an excellent 41 points. The leading Irishmen were Patrick Daly and Dion Breen in second on 36 points, while visiting Welsh pair, Lyndon Tudor and Peter Williams, came third with 35. Three pairings had 34 points with fourth place going to Paul Evans and Paul Sullivan while Gareth and Seamus Mallon were fifth.

The prize for the most appropriately decorated buggy was won by Eddie and Eileen Plunkett and Brian Elmore won the prize for the most appropriately dressed player.

The St Patrick’s Day competition began five years ago to mark the opening of Campo Europa, the resort’s third 18-hole course that secured its position as the largest golf resort in Spain. The event is also of special significance as La Cala Resort is owned by an Irish company, FBD Holdings plc.

The resort is an exclusive residential and recreational estate located between Marbella and Fuengirola and only 30 minutes from Airport. The principal facilities include a hotel, clubhouse and three 18-hole golf courses. It is also the location of the only David Leadbetter Golf Academy in the country. The complex has staged numerous important competitions such as the Ladies European Tour Q-school and the Spanish Pairs final, won by Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Andrés Jiménez. The resort’s 1,300 m2 Caracala Spa has gained a reputation as one of the most luxurious in the region with many après-golf treatments available.
