La Manga Club Resort
South Course (La Manga Golf Club)
Originally designed by Robert Putman and modified by Arnold Palmer, the South Course has undergone a complete refurbishment over the last couple of years. The main changes include more water hazards, tree plantation and green alterations and has seen it become much more of a challenge to the discerning golfer. The course is located in the centre of the valley and features wide palm-fringed fairways, a number of strategically positioned bunkers and plenty of cunning water hazards. The front nine is probably the tougher, with two par 3s measuring over 215 yards and some daunting par 4s, many of which demand accurate driving between lakes and bunkers.

North Course (La Manga Golf Club)
The North Course is slightly shorter than the South but has tighter fairways and larger greens. This undulating course is positioned between palm trees, lakes and barrancas (natural gullies) with precision rather than length required to score well. Built to USGA specification, the amount of movement in the greens adds to the challenge, especially the short par 3 2nd, which has three different tiers.

West Course (La Manga Golf Club)
Set amongst La Manga's pine woodland, the West Course offers a great alternative to the other, more classical championship courses. This undulating layout can be very deceiving, with the frequent changes in elevation making club selection the crucial factor to scoring well. The front nine is very tight and demands accurate driving if you are to stay clear of the barrancas. The back nine is much more open but still manages to offer a decent challenge. Set up amongst the hills, the West Course is a favourite with guests because of the wonderful views and the challenge offered by the course.

Former England and British Lions star Mark Regan will once more go from hooker to hacker when he attempts to defend his Wooden Spoon Golf Classic title at La Manga Club (www.lamangaclub.com), in May.The ex-Bristol and Leeds player will be just one of a host of rugby stars gracing the world-renowned resort’s fairways, with England legend Jason Leonard, ex-Scotland captain Gavin Hastings and England’s most-capped full-back, Matt Perry, among those vying to win the crown.
Leonard, England’s most-capped player, came third in the 2009 event but is aiming to improve on that this time round.
The prop forward said: “I’m really looking forward to getting back out to La Manga Club. It’s always a fantastic trip.
“Third place was a decent finish last year but I can’t let Mark take the glory again, so I’ll definitely be looking to come away with the title.
“Seriously though, it’s one of those events where no matter how you play you’re guaranteed to have a good time and it’s a fantastic way to raise some money for a tremendous cause.”
The competition’s fourth outing will be on May 19-23, with the three previous visits to La Manga Club raising more than £40,000 towards rugby-based children’s charity Wooden Spoon’s goal of helping underprivileged children and young people live happier, richer lives.
The Stableford contest will see teams of three play three competitive rounds, each with a different rugby star.
Hastings said: “I’m looking forward to competing in the fourth Wooden Spoon Golf Classic at La Manga Club. My family and I have enjoyed the resort for many years now, the facilities are first class for golfers and non-golfers alike.
“Three terrific golf courses, indoor and outdoor pools, fantastic spa facilities and a wide variety of restaurants make the resort perfect for the whole family and three days of competitive golf.”
Entry also includes four-nights’ bed and breakfast in the five-star Hotel La Manga Club Principe Felipe, a welcome drinks reception, welcome dinner, private barbeque, gala dinner with entertainment, a golfer’s goodie bag and a donation to Wooden Spoon among other things.
Packages for golfers start from just £999 per person, with players able to enter individually, or as a pair or full team, and non-playing packages are available for only £599.
Wooden Spoon’s deputy CEO, Tony Richards, said: “The golf classic at La Manga Club is always hugely successful for us. Over the years it has been a huge boost to our fundraising efforts and is one of the most enjoyable events we’re involved in.
“Every year the competition has grown, getting bigger and better. I’ve no doubt this will continue this year and I’m looking forward to another brilliant trip.”
