The short version..! 2008 trip with Surrey Uni mates Steve, Matt and Martin. Sun 22nd to Wed 25th June. Booked thru www.golfbreaks.com and very efficient as usual (3rd trip with them). Stayed at The Windsor Hotel, le Touquet. 2 Star. Frayed around the edges small twin room with adequate bathroom. Nice lounge and good breakfast. Didn't spend much time there! Early morning Eurotunnel crossing in two cars then 18 holes at Nampont St Martin on the Belvedere Course (par 70 SSS 68). Straightforward and forgiving course - a good warm-up track. Won stableford with 33 points. Happy with performance. Matchplay Steve and Me against matt and Martin ended in draw (my final putt on 18th to draw the match). Hot and sunny all day. Monday early start for 18 holes at Belle Dune - a fantastic and challenging course (par 71 SSS 73). Martin managed to excavate a monster divot on the 1st tee whilst being watched by starter and following group! Won stableford with 31 points. Very happy with performance on a tough course - felt I played better than score suggests. matchplay Martin and me won 2-0 against Steve and Matt. Very hot and sunny. A few penalties and missed opportunities on what could have been a cracking round. Dropped the ball within 8' on the 140 yd par 3 3rd. Tuesday late morning start for 18 holes at Hardelot Les Pines. Not played this course before. A really nice course with interesting and challenging holes (par 73 SSS 70). Played well once more to claim clean sweep of stableford wins with another 31 points. Again very hapopy with performance. Started badly with two 8's but otherwise quite steady - even manged a couple of decent tee off's with the driver. managed an excellent 5 Iron draw around a clump of trees on the back 9 which was very satisfying. Matchplay was Steve and I against Martin and Matt which we snatched a draw on the 18th to leave Martin and I in tied first place. Another hot and sunny day. All three eveings spent in Le Touquet between the fish restaurant oppostite the red Fox, Jean's Bar, the Leffe Bar and Le Globe trotter bar. Also ate in Le Matisse which was good. Lots of pool played int e backroom ofLe Globe Trotter. Contemplated playing Hardelot again on the wednesday but stuck with plan of visiting the Somme battlefireld sites as originally planned. Visited a couple of cemeteries at Poziers and Serre and spent a fair while at the Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval. All very moving and really worth doing. Retuned via Sainsbury's Calis late afternoon to end another excellent trip to Northern France. I'd recommend the area, the courses and www.golfbreaks.com.

| Dog's Luck! By Scott Boyd on 05-Jun-2008 Comments(0) | |
Played in a stableford competition at Whitehead on Saturday past, the title of this comp is 'Guide Dogs for the Blind'. It's a standing joke therefore amongst some of the entrants, to query of less awake players, as to when one gets ones Guide Dog? Some people when asked this question stare at you blankly, but eventually the Penny finally drops and we all have a good laugh at it. I started well on Saturday, putting my second shot to within 15 feet from the flag. My birdie putt was hit with no conviction and in fact was so poor, I missed the next one to take a big 5. I bogeyed the next 2 holes, parred the short 4th, before making a 'hash' of the par 3, 5th, taking an ugly 5 after a penalty shot. I bogeyed the par 5, 6th, 3 putting in the process, before taking 4 to get down after 2 good shots to the front of the 7th. I then out of the blue had a good 'wee run', parring 8, 9 and 10 and a good birdie on 11. I then inexorably (hope I've spelt that correctly), hit 2 balls out of bounds at the 12th, my one no-scoring hole in the entire round. Struggled to a 6 on the 13th, before bogeying the 14th. I then went on a parring spree, with another 3 in a row, 15, 16 and 17, put a good shot onto 18 but 3 putted from about 20 feet. After some of the rubbish I played, I suppose 34 points wasn't a bad return, hopefully 'things', can only get better!

| About Basic Golf By Ed from Basic Golf on 04-Jun-2008 Comments(0) | |
For years now, there has been a lack of high quality, in style apparel available at reasonable prices. In the past, if you wanted to take advantage of moisture wicking fabrics and cutting edge styles, you had to pay $60, $70...even $80 and up for shirts from the biggest golf companies. The other option was to pay a lot less, but get an inferior material and uninteresting colors you didn't really care to wear. Not anymore! Here you'll find a unique product line that you can't find anywhere else. The newest shirts, hats and accessories made with top quality materials like Cooldry fabric. What you won't find are the high prices! We offer high quality golf apparel that is cutting edge cool, but won't cost you a fortune. Try us out at Basic Golf and let us know what you think!
| My first blog...and there is progress!!! By Chris Hooley on 29-May-2008 Comments(2) | |
Well i suppose I should introduce myself first....my name is Chris and I'm from Manchester. When I was around 17 I took up golf but gave up after a couple of years of being utter pap and then last year started it up again after some guys at work asked if I fancied a round. So I tootled off to the driving range with the clubs I had used nearly 10 years earlier and hit a few balls. The first few were shocking to say the least!!! However I slowly got into the groove and then had the round at my local muni in Altrincham. A few hours later and I had shot a 97. Needless to say I was rather chuffed to break the 100 barrier on the first attempt. Bouyed by this I hit the range, got a couple of lessons off a pro and promptply hit a 110+ on Boysnope in Eccles....oops! Not detterred I perservered and this year started lessons on a regular basis. My game was broked down to the extreme and rebuilt with a good swing, stance, grip etc. My high came 2 weeks ago on Styal where I hit a 95 (play-to of 21) which i was pleased with. Following this, I went to Spain last week on a week long golf tour and my word those courses and much harder!!! Bunkers galore, loads of water and ravines all got in my way of posting a single decent round....the best was 116 on Panoramica which recently held a womens tour event. I did however make some progress with the mental side of the game in Spain thanks to my playing partners and I've stopped going for the Tiger shots and laying up a bit more. Very important when you are playing off 28. So, the present day is here. I went round Boysnope again yesterday and started off with a double bogey 6 on the 1st (but including a lovely 9-iron shot out of a water filled ditch), a bogey 5 on the second (silly tee shot) and then a par 3 on the 3rd (2 putted). From there my round went from strength to strength barring 1 or 2 holes and by the 18th I just needed a sensible hole to break the 100 barrier again....anything under a 9 would get it me...can anyone guess what I shot? Thats right, a bleeping 9 after a 210 yard drive!!!! To say I was annoyed was an understatement but I did have a play-to of 23 which was a big improvement on Spain where I played to 28 once and then well above the rest.. I quickly raced home to put my scorecard into the system here, hoping to see my handicap drop at least a bit but sadly it has stayed at 27.8. Mind you, a few more rounds playing to 23 and it should drop in no time!!! :-) If you got this far, congrats for reading my waffling and feel free to comment!

What can I say about this course, LOADS BUT IT AIN'T GOOD....... Seriously though I had a nightmare here not because the course was challenging in it's hole layout more because it was so hilly and there are far too many parallel fairways, up and down, up and down, along and back, along and back !!!!!!!!!!! I would play this again but only with a buggy, the trouble you get from the course walking seriously knackers you, on some holes I needed a breather before taking my second shot. John (Turnbull) who was with Mark Sobey and myself also found it hard going in more ways than one, which is why I could'nt resist the picture above. John taking his second shot from the Ladies Tee. sorry mate

| Birdie Boyd! By Scott Boyd on 05-May-2008 Comments(0) | |
Went with the boys from work on their society outing to Fortwilliam last Friday. Started steadily with two bogey 5s before losing my ball at the 3rd and ending up with a 7. Put my tee shot in the trees at the short par 4, 4th but played a 'down the shaft' 3 wood to the edge of the green and 2 putts for a par. Got a 6 on the par 5, 5th and then stuck a hybrid wood onto the par 3, 6th, but my birdie putt just shaved the hole, leaving a tap in 3. Hit a good drive up the 7th and hit an 8 iron to the back of the green, before holing a 20 footer for a birdie 3. Thought I had hit my tee shot on the next out of bounds (Fortwilliam is one of those annoying courses with internal out of bounds), but found it lying close to the 'out of bounds', but didn't capitalise on my good fortune, as I ran up a double bogey 6. played the next 2 holes in the same vein, double bogeys. Bogeyed the par 4, 11th, parred the short 12, where my birdie putt just stayed out, but how I don't know. Found the trees on my left, with my tee shot on the 13th and was happy in the end to settle for yet another double bogey. Hit a good drive down the par 5, 14th, before guiding a 3 wood to near the large fairway bunker and then watched in amazement as my wedge shot 'grazed' the hole, almost another eagle, but I at least holed out for a birdie 4. Hit a biggish drive on 15, leaving my ball about 2 feet from the burn that runs across the fairway, hit a good wedge on the green, but alas I 3 putted it. I then parred the stroke index4, par 4, 16th, bodeyed the par 3, 17th and finished with a good par on 18, where my wedge shot sat down beside the hole. All in all I was happy to be only 2 over my handicap, but as usual the double bogeys really hurt me, but the 2 bidrdies were a bonus, sets me up nicely for my trip to Tenerife tomorrow, (Tuesday), Buenos Nouchas Amigos!
| Deadly Doubles! By Scott Boyd on 05-May-2008 Comments(0) | |
That old familar 'double bogey' came back to haunt me last Thursday on a dry if somewhat windy day at Whitehead. Hit a good drive off the first tee and then 'shanked' a hybrid wood, played a poor chip shot, still not on the green and then took another 3 shots to get off with a double bogey 6. Bounced back right away with a par on the short 2nd, before holing a 20 footer on the 3rd to save par. Hit a good drive into the wind at the 4th and a 7 iron to 15 feet and a safe 2 putt for my third par in a row. Found the right hand bunker at the short 5th and took a further 3 shots to get down for a bogey 4. Hit a monster of a drive (wind assisted) on the par 5, 6th, followed by a duffed 3 wood, which scuttled along the ground and ended up being what we generally call 'a bad good 'un', leaving me a 40 yard shot to the green. For some reason I over-hit my wedge shot right through the green and was somewhat lucky to walk off with a bogey 6. Found the trees on the right from the 7th tee, played a good recovery shot to the crest of the hill leaving me about 140 yards to the front of the green. The pin was on the top tier, which makes the hole abot 20 yards longer so I decided to hit a 5 wood as it was into the prevailing wind, but I duffed it and had to settle for a chip and 2 putts, for a double bogey 6. Hacked my way down the 8th, taking another double bogey, before hitting a purple patch, parring, 9,10,11 & 12, before missing from 3 feet on 13 for a par, parred 14, bogeyed 15 & 16, before struggling to another double bogey 6 on 17. Got my usual bogey 4 on 18, but left the course knowing I should've done a whole lot better!

| Wasted Eagle! By Scott Boyd on 28-Apr-2008 Comments(0) | |
Had my first ever eagle while playing in the club comp last Saturday, but it was wasted as I was scoring pretty badly. Got off to a great start too, holed a 15 footer on the first for a par and then missed a birdie opportunity on the 2nd, but salvaged another par. I made a terrible mess of the par 5 3rd hole, carelessly missing a tap in for a 7, 3 putted the next 2 holes, before leaving a bunker shot stone dead on the 6th for a par 5. Had a good bogey 5 on the 7th and then made a complete 'horlicks' of the 8th, taking a 7, before finally getting down with a 4 on the 9th. Hit my tee shot down the left rough on the par 5, 10 and played a 5 wood to about the 150 yard marker (distance to the front of the green). I took out my 26% hybrid wood and as soon as I hit it I thought it was going to the right and I lamented this fact, with an exclamation of 'ah shucks' or words to that effect. My playing companions said its a perfectly good shot and it did straighten, hit the flag and dropped into the hole for an eagle 3. Although I felt euphoric, I still couldn't find my scoring touch and went bogey, bogey, double bogey, for the next 3 holes. I made a slight recovery with a good par on the 14th, followed by a bogey on 15, before running up a big 6, on 16 and finishing with 2 bogeys. 32 points in the club comp put me about in 110th place, but I will be able to boast about that eagle for many a long day, I can tell you!
| Celtic Manor By Luke Tricker on 23-Apr-2008 Comments(0) | |
I played the 2010 course at Celtic Manor on saturday, and I have to say it has some cracking holes, and there are a few that will cause some interesting shot choices when the ryder cup is played there! I had one of those rounds, where I was striking the ball pretty well, but just couldnt putt - this coulped with the windy conditions, meant that my scoring wasnt great, but it was an enjoyable day anyway!! I now cant wait for the Ryder cup, just so I can say - "I got a par on that hole", although I can only say that of about two holes!!!
